Chapter 7 - THE PHANTOM INVESTORThree months later, the Sterling Tower was operating at peak efficiency. The corporate restructuring had not only survived the scandal but had propelled Sterling Enterprises into record-breaking quarterly profits. David Thorne and his co-conspirators were sitting in federal holding cells awaiting trial, their legal defenses crumbling under the weight of airtight digital evidence.

Yet, beneath the glittering surface of success, a strange undercurrent began to ripple through the financial district.
It started with a series of anonymous encrypted transactions.
Late one Tuesday night, Maya sat in front of a triple-monitor setup in her private study, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. The blue light of the screens illuminated her focused, intense face.
"Alexander," she called out without turning around, knowing the soft footsteps belonged to him.
Alexander stepped into the room, holding two cups of herbal tea. He set one down beside her monitor. "Burning the midnight oil again, Director? The board will think I’m exploiting child labor."
"Shut up and look at this," Maya said, tapping a key to maximize a complex web of encrypted data nodes.
Alexander leaned in, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the visual representation of global financial flows. "What am I looking at?"
"A ghost," Maya said grimly. "Ever since Thorne went down, someone has been systematically buying up distressed shares of Sterling Enterprises stock through a maze of fifty different shell companies in Panama, Cyprus, and the Cayman Islands. They're pooling capital from an unknown source."
Alexander’s expression darkened. "Thorne is locked up. Who else has the liquidity and the motive to mount a hostile takeover?"
"That’s just it," Maya replied, pulling up a secondary dataset. "It’s not Thorne. The pattern of execution is different. It’s cleaner, quieter, and far more sophisticated. Whoever is behind this is spending billions—plural. And they’re funneling a portion of those funds directly into a dormant account linked to someone inside our own security network."
Alexander stood upright, the air in the room suddenly turning cold. "Inside our security network? Who?"

Before Maya could answer, the master alarm klaxon in the penthouse screamed to life. Red emergency lights began to pulse along the baseboards, casting long, frantic shadows across the white marble floors.
