Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACKThree weeks later, the glass-walled boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Sterling Tower was packed to capacity. The board of directors sat in dead silence, their eyes fixed on the mahogany table in front of them. Empty chairs marked where David Thorne and Marcus Vance used to sit.

Alexander stood at the head of the table, his expression unreadable.

"The internal review is complete," Alexander announced, his voice echoing off the glass. "Effective immediately, all executive positions held by associates of David Thorne are terminated with cause. Their assets are being frozen pending civil forfeiture suits for corporate sabotage and attempted murder."

A nervous murmur rippled through the board. One elderly director raised a hand. "Alexander, what about the public relations fallout? The press is having a field day with Celeste Fontaine’s arrest and the poisoning scandal at Aurelia."

"Let them talk," Alexander replied flatly. "Transparency is the best disinfectant. We are releasing the full security footage of the incident to major news outlets today. The world will see exactly what kind of snakes were crawling through our house—and how they were stopped."

He paused, glancing toward the heavy oak doors at the back of the boardroom.

"Furthermore," Alexander continued, a faint, rare smile touching the corner of his mouth, "we are establishing the Sterling Foundation for Youth Advocacy and Urban Intelligence—a multi-million-dollar initiative dedicated to providing education, housing, and resources for at-risk children in metropolitan areas."

The board members blinked in surprise. This wasn't just damage control; it was a public declaration of dominance and renewal.

"And who will run this foundation?" another director asked.

The oak doors swung open.

Maya walked in. She wasn't wearing the oversized blue hoodie or mud-caked sneakers anymore. She wore a tailored navy blue blazer, clean white sneakers, and carried a sleek digital tablet tucked under her arm. Her dark hair was neatly braided, and her startlingly blue eyes surveyed the boardroom of multi-billionaires with absolute, unshakeable confidence.

She walked straight to the empty seat beside Alexander, hopped up into the executive chair, and set her tablet down.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Maya said clearly, her voice cutting through the room with startling authority. "According to my preliminary analysis of our urban outreach budget, we're currently wasting forty percent of our community grants on redundant bureaucracy. I brought a spreadsheet on how we can optimize it."

The board stared in stunned silence. Alexander looked down at her, a profound sense of pride settling in his chest.

"Welcome aboard, Director of Youth Initiatives," Alexander said softly.
