Chapter 9 - THE TRAITOR IN THE SUITJulian Vance smiled, though his eyes were wide, frantic, and desperate. He held a high-capacity flash drive in his right hand, the data-transfer progress bar on the main screen glowing at ninety-nine percent.

"Alexander," Julian said smoothly, leaning against the console. "I wondered how long it would take you to notice the bleeding. Though I must admit, I didn't expect the street rat to sniff us out so quickly."

Alexander kept his pistol leveled directly at Julian’s chest. His voice was a lethal whisper. "You were Marcus's brother. I paid for your master's degree at MIT. I gave you the keys to the kingdom."

"You gave me a cage!" Julian suddenly snapped, his veneer of calm shattering as his face twisted into a mask of bitter hatred. "You sit up in your penthouse playing god while brilliant minds like mine and David's do the actual heavy lifting! You were old news, Alexander. The board wanted a modern tech-driven conglomerate, and you were standing in the way of the future."

"By selling out the company to offshore cartels?" Alexander stepped forward, the barrel of his gun steady. "Transfer is at ninety-nine percent, Julian. Pull your hand away from that console, or you won't live to spend a dime of it."

Julian let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "Too late, Alexander. The transfer is encrypted and decentralized across a thousand nodes. Even if you kill me right now, the data is gone, the hostile takeover is funded, and by morning, the board will vote you out of your own empire."

Suddenly, Maya stepped out from behind Alexander, her face calm, almost eerily composed. She tapped three times on her tablet.

"You're a brilliant programmer, Julian," Maya said, her young voice ringing clear in the server room. "Really. Top of your class at MIT. But you made one classic mistake."

Julian sneered down at her. "And what’s that, little girl?"

"You assumed that because you bypassed the physical firewall, you had root access to the core mainframe," Maya smiled, a cold, sharp smile that mirrored Alexander’s. "You didn't. Two weeks ago, after the Aurelia incident, I rewrote the network architecture and set up a honeypot trap on Port 8080. You aren't downloading our master assets, Julian..."

Maya pressed a button on her tablet.

"...you're downloading a quarantined loop that is currently tracing every single one of your offshore shell companies back to your personal Swiss cryptocurrency wallet, and broadcasting your location straight to Federal Cyber Command."

Julian’s face went completely, ghastly white. He lunged for the console to abort the transfer, but Alexander moved with terrifying speed.

A single shot cracked through the server room, shattering a glass cooling pipe inches above Julian’s head. Julian froze, his hands hovering over the keyboard, paralyzed by terror as the heavy thud of federal boots echoed up the stairwell behind them.

"Don't move," Alexander said softly. "The poetry club is back in session."
