Chapter 4 - The Corporate Coup
The room erupted into absolute chaos.
Richard’s business partners stood up abruptly, knocking their chairs backward. One of them, a senior board member named Marcus, pointed a shaking finger at Richard.
“You embezzled from the company reserves? You used corporate funds for your personal mistress while we were cutting employee budgets last year?” Marcus yelled, his face turning crimson.
“Marcus, wait! Don't listen to them! It's a conspiracy!” Richard screamed, waving his hands frantically as he tried to chase after his partners, who were already heading for the exit. “It’s fake documents! My son—my illegitimate son—is trying to ruin me!”
“Your son didn't just expose your finances, Richard,” Arthur Vance said loudly, cutting through the shouting. “He bought you out.”
Richard stopped dead in his tracks. He slowly turned around, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Bought... bought me out? With what money? He’s a college graduate! He has no money!”
Ethan walked calmly over to me, gently taking my trembling hand in his. He pressed a warm kiss onto my knuckles before turning back to face Richard.
“You always thought I was just studying business management, Richard,” Ethan said quietly. “You thought I was sitting in lectures taking notes on your old textbooks. You didn't know that three years ago, I started my own tech consultancy firm with a scholarship grant and angel investors who believed in my mother's integrity more than your corporate lies.”
Ethan reached into his jacket one last time and pulled out a single, pristine white sheet of heavy cardstock.
“Last week, my firm acquired a controlling majority share of Caldwell Enterprises' primary debt holdings,” Ethan continued, his voice echoing in the stunned silence. “And this morning, through a series of leveraged equity buyouts orchestrated by Arthur Vance, my company officially became the primary shareholder and majority owner of Caldwell Enterprises.”
Richard’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the table to keep from collapsing, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

“No... no, that’s impossible,” Richard whispered, staring blankly into space. “I built that company... I spent thirty years...”
“And in thirty seconds, you lost it all,” Ethan said coldly. “Because of your arrogance, your greed, and your utter disrespect for the woman who saved your life more times than you deserve to know.”
