Chapter 5 - The Final Judgment

The restaurant staff rushed in, sensing the disaster, but they didn’t dare interrupt. Richard stood frozen at the head of the table, a broken man stripped of his wealth, his company, and his social standing in a single evening.

He slowly turned his head, his tear-filled, bloodshot eyes landing on me.

“Margaret...” Richard choked out, taking a desperate step toward me. “Margaret, please. We’ve been married for twenty-seven years. You know me. You know I made mistakes, but... please tell him to stop. Don't let him destroy everything I worked for. We're family!”

I looked at him. For twenty-seven years, I had worn the armor of a devoted, forgiving wife. I had swallowed every insult, excused every absence, and carried the weight of his sins on my shoulders while he smiled for the cameras.

I slowly pulled my hand out of Ethan’s grasp, walked forward, and stopped two feet away from Richard.

“Richard,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and completely devoid of emotion. “The night you brought Ethan to our doorstep in a blue hospital blanket, I made a choice. I chose to be a mother. And for twenty years, I gave you my loyalty, my patience, and my unconditional love.”

Richard sniffled, nodding eagerly. “Yes, yes! You were a wonderful wife, Margaret—!”

“And tonight,” I interrupted, looking straight into his eyes, “you stood up in front of everyone and publicly mocked the only reason you had a home, a business, and a life to begin with. You thought my devotion was weakness. You thought my silence was permission.”

I reached up and slid my platinum wedding band off my finger.

It slipped off effortlessly, leaving a pale ring of skin behind.

I dropped the ring onto the mahogany table. It rolled a few inches before coming to a stop right on top of Richard’s foreclosure notice.

“Our marriage ended tonight, Richard,” I said softly. “And unlike your company, there is no buyout clause for this.”

Richard stared at the ring, letting out a ragged sob as his legs finally gave out entirely. He collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably as the remaining guests silently filtered out of the room.
