Chapter 2 - The Groom’s Counter-MoveBefore chaos could fully erupt, Ethan’s thumb hit a silent panic toggle on his customized smartphone.

Across the estate, heavy steel security shutters rolled down automatically over every glass exit of the ballroom, sealing the seven hundred guests inside. The ambient mood lighting instantly shifted from romantic amber to stark, blinding emergency white.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Ethan announced into the microphone, his voice unnervingly calm, carrying the absolute authority of a man who controlled billions. “Please remain seated. Nobody leaves this room until security completes a full sweep of the premises and checks every single exit.”
“Ethan, open these doors right now!” Harrison Sterling stormed toward the stage, his veins bulging. “Are you holding us hostage? My lawyers will strip you of everything you own by morning!”
“Let them try, Harrison,” Ethan replied coldly. He turned to his best man, Owen Price, who had turned completely pale. “Owen, lock down the digital command center. No external Wi-Fi signals in or out. Block all cellular traffic inside this perimeter until the local state police arrive.”
Owen swallowed hard, tapping furiously on his tablet. “Done. Cell service is jammed. Nobody is calling outside.”
Brooke was shaking now, tears pooling in her eyes as she clutched her silk wedding dress. “Ethan… how could you think… why would anyone want to hurt you? We just got married! We’re supposed to be starting our lives together!”
Ethan stared down at his bride, noticing for the first time the slight, imperceptible twitch in her left eyelid—a physical tell she only exhibited when she was lying under intense pressure.
“That’s the million-dollar question, Brooke,” Ethan said softly. “Who benefits the most if I die tonight before the midnight asset merger is finalized?”
The room went dead silent.
Everyone in the inner circle knew the stakes. Under the prenuptial agreement signed just forty-eight hours prior, if Ethan died before the stroke of midnight on their wedding day, 100% of Caldwell Systems’ voting shares and controlling stock automatically transferred to his surviving spouse—Brooke Sterling.
Brooke stepped back, her breath hitching. “You… you think I did this? You think I tried to poison you?”
“I don't know yet,” Ethan said, motioning to two heavy-set private security operatives standing near the service doors. “Search the catering crew. Every single one of them. And bring me the head chef.”
Rachel Monroe, still clutching Lily, looked up with wide, terrified eyes. “Mr. Caldwell… it wasn't the kitchen staff. I saw who switched the pitchers.”
Ethan turned his head sharply. “You saw who?”

Rachel pointed a trembling finger past the wall of panicked guests, straight toward a figure trying to slip unnoticed toward the side service exit.
“It was him,” Rachel gasped. “Mr. Sterling’s personal assistant. Marcus.”
