Chapter 8 - Inside the VaultThe heavy titanium doors of the underground server room were glowing a dull, cherry-red from a high-powered thermal cutting torch. Sparks showered across the reinforced concrete floor as two masked mercenaries worked frantically to slice through the final locking bolt.

Ethan didn't shout a warning.
He raised his rifle and fired two armor-piercing rounds directly through the center of the glowing steel seam.
The mercenaries spun around, drawing their sidearms, but Ethan was already moving like a ghost through the dense white smoke. Two rapid muzzle flashes lit up the dim vault corridor, and both intruders hit the floor, disarmed and neutralized.
Ethan stepped over them, swiped his master security card across the emergency override panel, and punched in his twelve-digit biometric PIN.
BZZZZT.
The massive two-ton titanium vault door hissed, releasing a cloud of pressurized nitrogen gas before slowly swinging inward.
Inside, rows upon rows of sleek black server racks hummed with blue LED lights, completely untouched. The physical backup core of Caldwell Systems was secure.
Ethan walked over to the primary master terminal, plugged in a secure thumb drive, and initiated an automated system-wide trace.
“Owen, come in,” Ethan spoke into his comms.
“Ethan! Thank God!” Owen’s voice came back immediately, sounding breathless. “The tactical teams outside are retreating! State police units just breached the perimeter gates and locked down the entire property! Are you okay?”
“I’m in the vault. Servers are secure,” Ethan said, his eyes scanning the fast-moving lines of data scrolling across the main monitor. “Trace the external server ping that initiated the cyber attack. Find out where the Syndicate’s primary relay is broadcasting from.”
“Running deep packet inspection now…” Owen muttered in the background. A pause stretched for ten tense seconds. “Got it! Ethan… you’re not going to believe this. The primary command server isn't overseas in the Caymans. It’s routed directly through a local private server farm registered under a shell corporation here in Hudson.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Whose corporation?”
“Harrison Sterling’s holding company,” Owen gasped. “Harrison wasn't just a victim or a pawn in the bailout… he was the founding silent partner of the entire Syndicate operation from day one!”

Ethan stared at the screen, a cold realization washing over him. It wasn't just a hostile corporate takeover. It was a multi-generational conspiracy backed by his own father-in-law to drain Caldwell Systems from the inside out, using Brooke as the ultimate Trojan horse.
And they had tried to poison him at their own wedding reception to seal the deal.
