Chapter 6 - Blood in the HallsThe heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom flew open as a squad of masked, black-clad operatives poured into the service corridor. Automatic rifles swept the hallway, their tactical flashlights cutting through the artificial fog of smoke grenades rolling in from the kitchens.

They expected panic. They expected easy targets.
Instead, they walked straight into a masterclass in tactical defense.
Ethan had designed Caldwell Ridge not just as an estate, but as a heavily fortified private compound following a string of high-profile corporate threats years prior. Every hallway, door frame, and lighting fixture was integrated into a smart-defense matrix.
Clack-hiss.
As the lead operative stepped onto the custom marble tiling near the north gallery, floor-level pneumatic vents released a high-pressure burst of disorienting flash-gas, blinding the intruders instantly.
“Contact!” an operative yelled into his comms.
Before the squad could recover, Ethan dropped down from the exposed overhead rafters behind them, his combat boot slamming squarely into the second operative’s spine. The man crashed hard onto the floor, his rifle clattering away.
Ethan scooped up the weapon with one fluid motion, pivoting and firing three precise rounds into the smart-locking mechanism of the hallway’s reinforced steel fire doors.
BAM-BAM-BAM.
The heavy steel slammed shut automatically, severing the invading squad in half and trapping the leading vanguard inside the narrow corridor with him.
“Secure the servers!” an encrypted voice barked through one of the downed operative’s dropped radio earpieces. “Eliminate the groom! Leave no survivors!”
Ethan stepped over the groaning mercenaries, his breathing controlled and steady. He tapped his comms link to connect directly with Owen in the panic room.
“Owen, report.”
“We’ve got all seven hundred guests secured behind the three-foot steel vault door in the East Gallery,” Owen’s voice crackled back, heavy with static. “Rachel, Lily, and the staff are safe with us. But Ethan… the basement vault doors are under heavy thermal drilling. They’re burning through the titanium locks right now!”
“How much time do I have?” Ethan asked, breaking into a sprint down the ancestral portrait hallway toward the grand staircase.
“Maybe three minutes before the main database is wiped!” Owen yelled. “Ethan, fall back! It’s too many of them!”
“I built this vault, Owen,” Ethan said coldly. “Nobody breaks into my house on my wedding day.”
As Ethan reached the top of the grand staircase, a sniper’s laser dot flickered across his chest from the courtyard below. Without hesitation, Ethan threw himself sideways over the mahogany banister just as a high-caliber round shattered the carved wooden railing where he had been standing a split second before.
He landed hard on the mid-landing, rolled smoothly, and returned fire through the double-paned glass doors leading out to the second-story balcony.
The sniper dropped out of sight.

But as Ethan pushed open the heavy oak door leading down to the underground server vaults, he found his path blocked by a familiar face standing in the shadows of the stairwell.
Marcus Vance was holding a heavy digital detonator box, his manicured clothes stained with dust and blood, a wild, unhinged look in his eyes.
