Chapter 1 - The First Thread to UnravelThe silence inside the high-rise penthouse was not the peaceful kind; it was the heavy, suffocating stillness that follows a bomb detonation. Grant Mercer stared at the empty space where Evelyn Hart had been standing just moments before. The door was clicked shut. No slammed wood, no echoing footsteps running down the corridor. Just nothing.

And that terrified him.
Grant walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the rain beat a relentless rhythm against the Manhattan skyline. For three years, everything in his world had operated on absolute control. He managed supply chains, political alliances, underworld territories, and human lives with the mechanical precision of a Swiss watch. Evelyn was supposed to be another asset—contained, monitored, and ultimately insignificant.
So why did his chest feel hollow?
"Boss?"
The voice belonged to Marcus, Grant’s most ruthless enforcer and shadow for over a decade. Marcus stepped into the study, his face bruised from a recent territorial dispute in Brooklyn, his eyes narrowed with professional caution.
"She's gone," Grant said, his voice entirely devoid of inflection.
"Good. The asset was a liability the moment she started asking questions about the European shipping logs," Marcus replied, adjusting his cuffs. "I’ll have a team track her burner phone, sweep her accounts, and make sure she doesn't mention Mercer Holdings to federal investigators."
Grant didn't answer immediately. He turned slowly, his sharp gaze cutting straight through Marcus.
"Don't touch her accounts," Grant commanded, low and dangerous. "And call off the trackers."
Marcus frowned, a rare flash of confusion crossing his weathered face. "Boss, with all due respect, if she goes to the DOJ with the financial architecture we built over the last five years, everything we own—every shell company, every port, every bank—is exposed."
"Let her try," Grant muttered, though a cold knot tightened in his stomach. He didn't say it out loud, but he knew Evelyn better than Marcus ever would. She wouldn't go to the DOJ. She wouldn't run to the feds, and she wouldn't try to blackmail him.

She was going to do something much worse.
She was going to disappear completely, leaving him with an empire built on blood and paper, and absolutely nothing left that mattered.
