Chapter 10 - The Last LedgerOne year later.

The morning sun shone brightly over a quiet, tree-lined suburban street in upstate New York. The air smelled of damp earth, pine trees, and fresh coffee.

A small, modest two-story house with a white picket fence and a slightly squeaky front porch stood peacefully against the backdrop of rolling green hills. There were no guards stationed at the gates, no bulletproof Maybachs idling in the driveway, and no locked elevators.

Inside the sunlit kitchen, Evelyn sat at a wooden table, wearing a comfortable flannel shirt, reviewing a simple balance sheet for a local community bookstore she now co-owned.

Footsteps echoed softly down the wooden stairs.

Grant walked into the kitchen wearing a simple grey t-shirt and jeans, carrying a fresh pot of coffee. His broad shoulders were relaxed, the hard, dangerous edge in his eyes replaced by a quiet, grounded warmth. He had traded his tailored charcoal suits for work boots and a toolbox, spending his days helping renovate local community centers and teaching financial literacy to troubled youths.

He poured two mugs of coffee, sliding one across the table to Evelyn before leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to the top of her head.

"Morning, accountant," Grant murmured, a faint smirk on his face.

"Morning, Mr. Mercer," Evelyn replied, taking a sip of the coffee and looking up at him with a teasing glint in her eyes. "Did you check the books today? Are we bankrupt yet?"

Grant laughed—a real, deep, genuine sound that would have shocked anyone who knew him from his Manhattan days. He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down, resting his chin on his hand.

"Actually, the bookstore made a profit of four hundred dollars this month," Grant said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Which means I might actually be able to afford to take you out for dinner at that diner with the broken radiator in town."

Evelyn smiled brightly, her heart swelling with a deep, unbreakable peace.

They had lost an empire, risked their lives, and walked through the absolute fire of betrayal and violence. But looking across the table at the man who had once told her she meant nothing, Evelyn knew the ultimate truth.

He hadn't destroyed his empire to bring her back.

He had destroyed it to finally find her.
