Chapter 2 - The Audit of the CenturyForty-eight hours after walking out of the Mercer penthouse, Evelyn Hart sat at a sticky laminate table inside a twenty-four-hour diner in Queens. The radiator hissed loudly beside her, leaking steam into the cramped room. She wore a faded oversized sweater, her hair tied back in a messy knot, looking entirely like the ordinary forensic accountant she had been before Grant Mercer hijacked her life.

Except she wasn't ordinary anymore.
Spread across the table were three thick, waterproof manila folders containing printouts, cryptographic ledger hashes, and physical receipts she had quietly copied during her final six months inside Mercer Holdings.
She took a slow sip of lukewarm, metallic black coffee.
Across from her sat Arthur Vance, her former senior partner from the Midtown firm—the man who had supposedly gone into "sudden early retirement" three years ago. In reality, Grant had tucked him away in a heavily guarded cabin upstate to keep him quiet. Evelyn had spent the last two months secretly funding his medical care and orchestrating his release.
"Evelyn, you're out of your mind," Arthur whispered, his hands shaking as he stared at the financial maps. "Grant Mercer isn't a corporate rival you can out-audit. If he finds out we are systematically dismantling his liquidity streams, he won't just kill us. He’ll make sure our names are scrubbed from public records entirely."
"He already told me I mean nothing to him, Arthur," Evelyn replied, her voice eerily calm, her eyes sharp and devoid of fear. "A man who thinks someone means nothing won't waste resources protecting them. He thinks he’s untouchable because his money is everywhere. So, we’re going to prove to him that his money is actually a trap."
"How?" Arthur asked, swallowing hard. "His primary capital is backed by off-shore Swiss accounts and real estate trusts. We can't touch those without triggering federal flags."
"We aren't going to steal his money," Evelyn said, sliding a specific ledger page across the table. "We are going to return every single illegal asset back to the exact corporate entities he stole them from, simultaneously, across twelve international time zones, using his own digital signatures."

Arthur stared at her in absolute horror. "That will trigger an immediate systemic collapse of Mercer Holdings. It’ll wipe out three billion dollars of liquid capital in under ten minutes."
"Good," Evelyn smiled faintly. "Let's see how much he loves his empire when it turns to dust."
