Chapter 3 - The First Domino FallsThe headquarters of Mercer Holdings occupied the top four floors of a gleaming glass skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. It was noon, and the boardroom was filled with senior regional directors, legal counsels, and financial advisors. Grant sat at the head of the mahogany table, listening to a presentation on European logistics expansion.

Suddenly, the massive wall-mounted digital display—normally reserved for stock tickers and profit projections—flickered violently.
The standard green numbers vanished.
A stark white screen appeared, displaying a single, chillingly familiar signature: Evelyn Hart.
"What is this?" snapped Viktor, the head of European operations, standing up. "Is this a cyber attack? Cut the feed!"
Before anyone could touch a keyboard, every laptop, tablet, and terminal in the boardroom beeped in unison.
Grant didn't flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, his dark eyes locked onto the screen as a line of text scrolled across the display:
ASSET REALLOCATION IN PROGRESS. RETURNING ILL-GOTTEN GAINS TO ORIGINAL HOLDERS.
"Sir!" yelled the chief technology officer, his face completely drained of color. "It’s not malware. It’s an administrative override using your master cryptographic key... paired with a secondary verification token."
"Whose token?" Grant asked coldly.
"Evelyn Hart's," the CTO stammered. "She... she had a dormant backdoor built into the core financial ledger. She’s unravelling our entire balance sheet from the inside out."
"Stop her," Grant ordered, though a strange, dark thrill flickered in his chest. She didn't run to the feds, he realized. She came for my money.
"We can't!" the CTO cried, frantically typing. "She isn't just deleting accounts; she’s redistributing liquid capital back to the subsidiary corporations we acquired over the last decade. Our credit lines are dropping by the second. Banks are freezing our assets automatically due to anomalous high-volume transactions! Boss... we are losing millions every three seconds."
Marcus burst through the double doors of the boardroom, breathless, clutching a secure satellite phone.
"Boss! We tracked the digital signature! It’s coming from a burner terminal routed through three different proxy servers in Queens." Marcus slammed his hand on the table. "Do we roll in and burn the location down?"
Grant stood up slowly, adjusting his suit jacket. His face was a mask of cold fury, but deep inside, an electric shock of adrenaline surged through his veins. She had looked him in the eye, smiled, and said she understood.

This was her reply.
"No," Grant said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Get my car. I’m going to go collect my accountant myself."
