Chapter 19 - Ashes to EmpireThree days later, the New York underworld returned to a state of absolute, reverent equilibrium.

The attempted coup by the Marseille Cartel was quietly buried beneath layers of federal bribes, shell company liquidations, and silent sea burials. To the public and the authorities, it was just another gangland dispute in the outer boroughs.

I sat alone in my Manhattan penthouse study, the morning sun streaming through the reinforced glass windows, warming the polished mahogany desk.

The door opened softly, and Marco stepped inside—not as a captive, but as a man who had earned a second chance through absolute, uncompromising survival. His temple was still bandaged from where I struck him, but his stance was steady.

"The European ports have officially renewed their exclusive contracts with us," Marco reported, laying a crisp, leather-bound folder on the desk. "All offshore accounts belonging to Vance and the Marseille lieutenants have been fully transferred into the Moretti treasury."

"And Sophia and Emma?" I asked, not looking up from the documents.

"They boarded a private flight to Zurich this morning," Marco replied quietly. "With full diplomatic immunity and enough bearer bonds to ensure they never have to look over their shoulders again."

I nodded slowly, reaching out and opening the leather folder.

Inside sat the financial ledgers, shipping manifests, and absolute control of the largest criminal empire on the eastern seaboard. I was the undisputed king of New York once more.

Marco hesitated by the door for a fraction of a second. "Boss... do you regret any of it? The wedding, the betrayal, the blood?"

I stopped turning the pages. My eyes drifted toward the corner of the desk, where a single, slightly frayed, mismatched white cotton sock with a small cartoon dinosaur stitched near the ankle sat neatly framed in glass.

I smiled faintly.

"Regret is for men who don't pay attention to the details, Marco," I said, leaning back in my leather chair. "Never underestimate a child who points out the cracks in your house. Because if you don't fix them, the whole damn building comes down."
