Chapter 5 - Checkmate in BloodThe courtyard froze into a tableau of absolute nightmare.

Little Emma let out a terrified wail, her small body shaking violently as the cold ceramic barrel pressed into the soft skin of her temple. Sophia shrieked, collapsing onto her knees and clawing at the dirt, sobbing hysterically as she begged for her daughter's life.

"Isabella," I said, my voice dangerously level. I didn't drop my Beretta. Instead, I raised it slowly, aligning the sights dead-center between Isabella’s eyes. "You have exactly three seconds to lower that weapon before I turn your skull into fine red mist."

"Try it!" Isabella laughed wildly, her finger twitching nervously against the trigger. "At three hundred yards, maybe you'd hit me. But at three feet? My finger moves faster than your reaction time, Alessandro. Lower your gun, or the kid dies right here!"

Julian, still wiping blood from his swollen lip, scrambled up from the ground. He grinned a bloody, manic grin, emboldened by Isabella's desperate gambit.

"That's right, cousin!" Julian mocked, coughing up a bit of crimson. "You lost! The empire is split fifty-fifty between us. Lower your weapon and walk away, and maybe—just maybe—we won't hunt you down like a dog."

I looked at Julian. Then I looked at Isabella. Then my eyes flicked briefly toward the high stone wall behind the chapel.

"You think you calculated every variable, don't you?" I asked softly.

Isabella frowned, her grip tightening on the gun. "What are you talking about?"

"You forgot about the third rule of the Moretti syndicate," I said, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of my mouth. "Never trust a partner who is greedier than you are."

Julian’s face went slack. "What do you mean?"

Suddenly, the heavy iron gates at the main entrance didn't just rattle—they exploded inward with a deafening blast. Heavy steel panels blew off their hinges as two armored SUVs tore through the courtyard, kicking up clouds of white gravel and dust.

Before anyone could process the ambush, a dozen armed men in black tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, their assault rifles raised and locked onto a single target.

Not me.

The laser sights flooded Julian’s chest.

Julian stumbled backward, his eyes widening in pure horror as the lead tactical operator stepped forward, lowering night-vision goggles to reveal a scarred, merciless face.

"Capo Vance," Julian choked out, staring at the man he thought was his secret co-conspirator. "What is the meaning of this? I'm your boss now! I signed your payout contracts this morning!"

Vance didn't even look at Julian. He looked directly at me, snapping off a crisp salute.

"Perimeter secure, Boss," Vance reported loudly. "All of Julian’s offshore accounts have been frozen by our cyber-unit. His private mercenaries in Queens were rounded up ten minutes ago without firing a single shot."

Isabella’s jaw dropped. The ceramic pistol in her hand began to tremble violently. "No... no, that's impossible! We paid Vance off! We had the wire transfers!"

"You did," I said, taking a slow step forward. "Except Julian forgot one simple detail: Vance has been my head of internal security for ten years. Every dollar you tried to bribe him with went straight into my personal treasury, and every message you sent him was forwarded to my tablet before you even hit 'send'."
