Chapter 14 - The Cellblock Confession

The heavy iron door of the prison visiting room clanged shut. Paola sat on the opposite side of the scratched glass partition, wearing a faded orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with her dyed blonde hair.
Moments later, Adrián was dragged in by two guards, his face pale and gaunt, his eyes hollowed out by months of sleepless nights. When he saw Paola sitting there, a surge of pure, unadulterated fury distorted his features. He lunged toward the glass, screaming obscenities before the guards slammed him into the metal chair.
Paola didn't flinch. She picked up the plastic phone receiver, her expression dead and devoid of the sweet, mocking smile she had worn at the hotel gala.
“You did this,” Adrián hissed into his receiver, his voice trembling with rage. “You told me Valeria would never find out about Mariana! You said we had covered every track!”

“We were stupid, Adrián,” Paola whispered back, her voice flat. “We believed our own lies. We thought Valeria was just a quiet country mouse who didn't know how the world worked. We forgot that she comes from the family that owns the banks holding our chains.”
She hung up the phone without saying another word, stood up, and let the guards lead her back into the dark labyrinth of the cell block, leaving Adrián screaming at her reflection in the glass.
