Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Badge

The silence that followed Detective Marcus Vance addressing me as "Chief" was heavy enough to crack pavement.

Jessica’s smirk vanished completely, replaced by a sudden, rigid confusion. She looked from Vance’s gold shield to my worn canvas jacket, then back to Vance, whose expression had hardened into something glacial. For twenty-five years, I had worn the gold star of the police department in this county before retiring to my garage, old trucks, and quiet mornings. To Jessica and Michael, I was just Emily’s country-road father—someone they patronized at family dinners, an old man who smelled like motor oil.

Vance didn't look at Jessica. He knelt beside me, his eyes taking in Emily’s bruised face, the torn blouse, and the protective way she held onto my wrist.

"Chief Miller," Vance said quietly, his voice carrying the professional steel I had trained him to use years ago. "I'm heading this scene. We have units out looking for Michael’s vehicle. Do you want me to handle the custody of the premises, or are you taking charge?"

"You run it, Marcus," I replied, my voice steady despite the rage burning a hole in my chest. "Treat it textbook. Secure the perimeter, log every piece of debris, and pull the neighborhood traffic cameras."

Across the room, Jessica found her voice, though it pitched an octave too high. "Excuse me! Who do you think you are walking into my home and taking orders from—from a handyman? My son didn't do anything! That girl threw herself down!"

Vance stood up slowly, turning to face her with eyes like chips of winter ice. "Ma'am, step back from the rug. You are currently standing inside a secured crime scene. Officer, escort Ms. Reynolds to the kitchen and take her formal statement. Separate her from any communications."

"You can't do this!" Jessica shrieked as two patrol officers stepped in, gently but firmly guiding her away. "I know the district attorney! I know the city councilmen!"

"Then you know they prefer their investigations thorough," Vance said flatly, turning his back on her.

Emily shifted beneath my coat, her breath catching. "Dad... is he really coming back?"

"Not tonight, sweetheart," I whispered, brushing a damp lock of hair from her forehead. "And not ever again if I have anything to say about it."
