Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Vault

While Vance escorted Jessica out in handcuffs—her designer handbag swinging uselessly against her knees—I stayed behind in the living room to pack up Emily’s remaining clothes.
The house felt hollow now, stripped of its artificial warmth.
As I zipped up Emily’s suitcase, something caught my eye near the baseboard of the study. A loose floorboard, slightly askew, caught the light of my flashlight. In houses like this—built on old money and older secrets—people always kept a secondary hiding spot where digital drives and emergency cash lived.
I crouched down, slid the wooden plank aside, and pulled out a heavy, fireproof metal lockbox.
It wasn't locked with a key; it had a digital keypad. Remembering the birthdate Jessica used for her primary charity foundation, I punched in the numbers.
Click.
The lid popped open. Inside wasn't money. It was a stack of legal documents, a ledger with names of local judges and politicians marked with monetary amounts, and a flash drive labeled “REYNOLDS LEVERAGE ARCHIVE.”
But what made my blood run cold was a handwritten notebook sitting right on top.
I opened it and began to read. It wasn't just a diary. It was a catalog of ruined lives—families coerced into silence, former business partners pushed out through manufactured scandals, and, most horrifyingly, details of a previous daughter-in-law who had "disappeared" to Europe five years ago after filing for divorce from Michael.

The notes in Jessica’s meticulous cursive detailed how they had threatened to take her children away unless she signed a non-disclosure agreement and walked out of the country with nothing.
Emily wasn't the first victim. She was just the one who refused to vanish quietly.
