Chapter 7 - The Final Chess Move

Two days later, the story broke across every major news station in the state.

“EX-POLICE CHIEF TAKES DOWN CORRUPT DYNASTY: REYNOLDS FAMILY EMPIRE CRUMBLES FOLLOWING DOMESTIC ABUSE ARREST.”

Headlines flashed across screens showing Michael in a perp walk, his head bowed down in shame, and Jessica being led out of her mansion in handcuffs, her face obscured by a tailored coat. The public outrage was immediate and overwhelming. Protesters gathered outside their corporate headquarters, and local politicians who had taken campaign donations from Jessica suddenly rushed to return the money.

Michael and Jessica were denied bail due to flight risk and witness tampering charges. The prosecutor announced a multi-count indictment that included domestic violence, kidnapping, extortion, and bribery—guaranteeing decades behind bars for both of them.

I was back in the garage, standing by my old pickup truck with a cup of cold coffee in one hand and a socket wrench in the other.

The rain had stopped, and the morning sun was burning through the clouds.
