Chapter 6 - The Emergency Room Revelation

At St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the overhead lights hummed quietly as I sat beside Emily’s hospital bed. She was resting under a mild sedative, her bruised cheek treated and a light brace supporting her ribs.

The door clicked open, and Detective Vance walked in, holding the metal lockbox and the flash drive I had handed him ten minutes earlier.

"Chief," Vance said softly, closing the door behind him so as not to wake Emily. "We plugged the drive into our secure terminal at the station. It’s worse than we thought."

"How bad?" I asked, keeping my eyes on my sleeping daughter’s face.

"It’s a master-class in extortion," Vance said, dropping into the chair opposite mine. "That flash drive contains audio recordings of Michael threatening multiple victims, bank routing numbers for judicial bribes, and emails proving Jessica orchestrated the cover-up of the previous wife's assault. The DA’s office can't sweep this under the rug even if they wanted to—the state attorney general's office is already downloading the files."

Emily stirred, her eyelids fluttering open. She looked around the sterile white room in momentary panic before her gaze landed on me.

"Dad?" she whispered, her voice raspy.

"I'm right here, sweet pea," I said, taking her hand and squeezing it gently. "You're safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you in that house again."

A tear slipped down her uninjured cheek. "I was so scared, Dad. I thought... I thought nobody would ever believe me because they had so much money."

"They forgot one important rule," I smiled softly. "Money talks, but a father’s wrath echoes forever."
