Chapter 10 - THE QUEEN'S CHECKMATEThe penthouse gala for the launch of Cross-Hart Holdings was nothing short of legendary. The crystal chandeliers glittered just as brightly as they had months ago at the Vale Foundation Gala, but the atmosphere in the grand ballroom was entirely different. There was no fear here. No fragile alliances built on intimidation and deceit.

Every billionaire, politician, and international investor in Chicago stood in respectful silence as the double doors at the head of the grand staircase swung open.

Evelyn Hart descended the stairs alone at first.

She wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored crimson silk gown that moved like liquid fire, the sapphire bracelet sparkling brilliantly against her wrist under the lights. Every eye in the room was locked onto her—not out of pity, not out of mockery, but out of absolute, unwavering awe.

At the bottom of the staircase, Julian Cross waited for her. He didn't offer his arm as a crutch; he offered it as an equal partner.

As Evelyn placed her hand in his, the string quartet struck up a powerful, triumphant waltz—not a melancholy tune of hidden grief, but a melody of absolute conquest.

Outside, huddled in the cold rain across the street from the glowing grand entrance, a gaunt man in a cheap, wet coat stared up through the massive glass windows. Dominic Vale watched his former wife laugh softly at something Julian whispered in her ear—a sound of pure, unbridled joy he had never once been able to elicit from her during all their years together.

He raised a shaking hand to wipe the rain from his eyes, but his fingers hit only cold glass and empty air.

Inside the ballroom, Evelyn didn't look out into the rain. She didn't need to. She was already dancing in the future she had written with her own hands, leaving the ghosts of her past far behind in the dark.
