The photo accompanying the article was not a picture of a grieving, humiliated wife standing in the shadow of an unfaithful husband. It was a crisp, commanding portrait of Evelyn Hart—dressed in a sharp, tailored midnight-blue suit, standing tall in the center of the newly rebranded Cross-Hart Tower, with Julian Cross standing slightly behind her, a silent, powerful pillar of support rather than an adversary.
Across the city, in a cramped, nondescript studio apartment above a 24-hour laundromat, Dominic Vale stared at the newspaper spread clutched in his trembling hands. His custom designer suits were gone, sold off to pay mounting legal fees. His phone had stopped ringing weeks ago. Even Vanessa had packed her bags and vanished into the night after realizing there was no money left to steal.
Dominic looked at the picture of Evelyn’s piercing, confident eyes. He finally understood what her mother had tried to warn him about years ago, before she passed away.
