Chapter 9 - THE INVITATIONThe sun was setting over Lake Michigan once again, casting a brilliant orange and purple glow across the executive suite on the fiftieth floor of the Cross-Hart Tower.

Evelyn stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the bustling streets of Chicago. Her phone buzzed on the sleek marble desk behind her. She picked it up, glancing at the screen. It was an unlisted number, but she already knew who it was.

She slid to answer and placed the phone to her ear.

"He tried to check into a motel under an alias this afternoon," Julian’s voice came through the speaker, calm and steady. "The manager recognized him and threw him out."

Evelyn stared at her reflection in the glass. She saw a woman who had survived betrayal, grief, and manipulation, and emerged stronger, sharper, and completely untouchable.

"Is he looking for help?" Evelyn asked, her voice devoid of pity, yet entirely steady.

"He's looking for anyone who will listen to how unfairly he was treated," Julian replied dryly. "Shall I have security escort him off the property if he comes near the building?"

Evelyn paused, a faint, cryptic smile touching the corners of her lips. She reached down and touched the sapphire bracelet resting securely against her wrist—the one her mother had given her, the one Vanessa had briefly stolen, and the one that now symbolized a life entirely reclaimed.

"No, Julian," Evelyn said softly, her eyes gleaming with absolute power. "Let him come. Let him look up through the glass and see exactly what happens when you underestimate a woman who built your empire from the ground up."

"On my way up to your office now," Julian murmured. "We have a new portfolio to review. And perhaps... a celebration to plan."

"Hurry up, Mr. Cross," Evelyn replied, turning away from the window as the office door clicked open. "The night is young, and for the first time in my life, I own every single minute of it."
