Chapter 7 - DAWN OVER LAKE MICHIGANThe first pale streaks of pink and gold sunlight began to crest over Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago skyline in breathtaking shades of fire.

Evelyn stood on the private balcony of the Vale penthouse, looking out over the city she had spent twelve years organizing, protecting, and quietly conquering. The wind caught the ends of her trench coat, but she didn't shiver. For the first time in over a decade, she felt entirely warm.

Footsteps sounded behind her. She didn't need to turn around to know it was Julian.

"The federal marshals escorted them out ten minutes ago," Julian said quietly, stepping out onto the balcony beside her and handing her a steaming cup of black coffee in a simple ceramic mug. "Dominic is screaming about lawyers in the lobby. Vanessa is crying in an Uber."

Evelyn took the mug, inhaling the rich aroma before taking a slow sip. "Let them scream. The city is finally quiet."

Julian leaned against the stone railing, watching her profile. "You know, when I first started watching you three years ago, I thought you were just the most brilliant strategist Dominic never deserved."

"And now?" Evelyn asked, turning her dark, intelligent eyes toward him with a slight, challenging smile.

"Now," Julian murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rich with admiration, "I realize you were the entire kingdom, and Dominic was just a placeholder waiting for the true queen to take the crown."

Evelyn raised her coffee mug toward him in a silent toast. "Careful, Julian. Kings who underestimate their queens usually find themselves dethroned."

Julian laughed, a low, genuine sound that blended with the morning wind. "Then it’s a good thing I have no intention of playing against you. Only with you."
