Chapter 20 - The Unwritten CanvasThe morning sun broke over the Westport hills like a fresh wash of titanium white across a clean canvas.

Inside the cedar cottage, the house was quiet except for the soft clinking of spoons in cereal bowls and the gentle hum of the refrigerator. Nathaniel stood at the kitchen counter, pouring milk into three small bowls while Miles carefully arranged sliced bananas into smiley faces.

"Dad," Grace asked, looking up from her cereal with her grey eyes wide and serious. "Can we paint the front door bright yellow today?"

Nathaniel looked over at Elena, who was standing in the doorway with a mug of coffee, a soft, knowing smile playing on her lips. She raised her eyebrows in silent challenge.

Nathaniel picked up his coffee, walked over to Elena, and wrapped his free arm around her waist, pulling her close.

"Yellow?" Nathaniel pretended to consider the architectural implications deeply, tapping his chin with a finger. "That might violate the aesthetic standards of the Westport Horticultural Society."

"Tell the Horticultural Society we're updating our corporate policy," Elena whispered, leaning up to kiss him.

"Corporate policy updated," Nathaniel smiled against her lips, looking out the window at the golden sunlight flooding the porch, the oversized red tricycle, and the endless horizon stretching out beyond the trees. "Yellow it is."
