Chapter 23 - The Manhattan Counter-StrikeThe next morning, before the sun had fully crested the tree line, Nathaniel was in the town car heading south toward the city. He hadn't told Elena his complete plan; he knew she would argue against him walking straight back into the lion's den. But there were some wars that had to be fought at the source.

The black sedan pulled up outside the Lockwood Financial headquarters on Madison Avenue at precisely 8:30 AM.
Nathaniel walked through the towering glass revolving doors without a badge, his presence alone causing the lobby security guards to hesitate. He bypassed the elevators, taking the private service stairs straight up to the executive suite on the thirty-fifth floor.
Richard Lockwood was sitting behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing a portfolio of legal injunctions, when the heavy double doors swung open.
"You're remarkably persistent, Nathaniel," Richard said without looking up. "I told you, the injunction stands until—"
"Until I sign away my voting rights?" Nathaniel interrupted, walking straight across the plush carpet and leaning both palms on the desk, towering over the older man. "You made a tactical error, Richard."
Richard slowly lowered his pen, looking up with a smug smile. "And what error is that? Trying to reclaim what rightfully belongs to my daughter's future family?"
"No," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a cold, flat whisper. "Your error was assuming that when I dismantled Cross Holdings' toxic assets, I left my personal accounts unprotected."
He tossed a thin, cream-colored manila folder onto the desk. Richard opened it lazily, but within three seconds, his smug expression vanished, replaced by a sudden, violent pallor.
"This... this is impossible," Richard stammered, his hands shaking slightly as he flipped through the pages of offshore wire transactions, shell corporation deeds, and tax evasion logs.
"That's a complete forensic audit of Lockwood Financial's private overseas subsidiary accounts in the Isle of Man," Nathaniel said, straightening up and adjusting his cuffs. "Managed by your brother-in-law, funded by municipal bond kickbacks, and signed off by your own compliance officer who flipped yesterday afternoon in exchange for immunity from the federal prosecutor."
Richard gripped the edges of the desk, his face turning the color of curdled milk. "You... you audited my family office?"
"You threatened my home, Richard," Nathaniel said softly. "In my world, that’s an act of war. You have until noon to withdraw the surrogate court conservatorship petition against my mother, dismiss the restraining order on the Westport trust, and publicly announce that Lockwood Financial is divesting all claims against Cross Holdings."
May you like
"And if I don't?" Richard whispered, his voice cracking.
"Then by 1:00 PM, the federal DA's office holds a press conference on the steps of Federal Hall," Nathaniel said, turning toward the door. "Choose wisely, Richard. Your empire has glass walls, too."
