Chapter 30 - The MasterpieceYears later, when the children had grown into tall, sharp-minded teenagers who debated architecture at the dinner table and argued about the structural integrity of treehouses, the Westport cottage remained exactly as it had always been—except for the light.

The new studio was finished, its massive glass windows constantly smeared with paint, charcoal, and the fingerprints of a family that lived out loud.

On a quiet Sunday evening, Nathaniel stood in the doorway of the studio, watching Elena work on her final canvas for a retrospective exhibition celebrating twenty years of independent local art.

The painting was simple, powerful, and breathtaking: an old cedar cottage with a bright yellow door, standing tall and unyielding beneath a sky full of stars, guarded by a deep, protective forest, with three small figures running toward the light.

Elena stepped back, wiping her hands on a rag, and looked up to find Nathaniel watching her from the doorway.

She walked over to him, her fingers stained with cobalt blue and burnt sienna, and slipped her arms around his waist. Nathaniel wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on her head, breathing in the scent of lavender, turpentine, and home.

"Is it finished?" Nathaniel whispered.

Elena looked up at the canvas, then back into his steady, grey eyes.

"It’s finished," she smiled, pressing her hand against his heart. "And the best part is... we’re still painting the next chapter."
