Chapter 25 - The Heart of the HouseThe transition was absolute. Within a week, Nathaniel’s Manhattan penthouse—a cavernous, sterile monument of glass, chrome, and isolation—was completely emptied. The keys were handed over to a charitable foundation, and the life he had built in the shadow of his mother's ambitions was officially sealed away in the past.

Back in Westport, the cottage was filled with the chaotic, beautiful noise of a real home.
It was a Friday evening, and the first true winter snow was beginning to fall, dusting the pine trees and painting the windows in delicate frost crystals. Inside, the living room was lit by a roaring fire in the stone hearth.
Miles, Grace, and Sophie were busy constructing an elaborate fortress out of couch cushions and old art boxes, while Nathaniel sat on the floor with them, acting as the primary load-bearing wall for their cardboard citadel.
Elena stood in the kitchen doorway, watching them through a haze of steam rising from a mug of spiced cider. Her heart felt so full it ached.
Nathaniel caught her eye over Miles's head. He excused himself from the fortress committee, stood up, and walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" he murmured against her ear.
"I'm thinking about that night at the Grand Lydian ballroom," Elena whispered, leaning back into his embrace. "When you stood there in your custom Tom Ford suit, looking like you wanted to either murder me or weep."
"I wanted to do both," Nathaniel admitted honestly. "I was a broken man wrapped in an expensive suit, pretending I had everything figured out."
"And now?"
"Now I'm just a guy who makes terrible origami frogs and loves his wife way too much," Nathaniel smiled, turning her around so he could look down into her hazel eyes.
"You know," Elena smiled, her fingers resting lightly on his lapels, "your mother still hasn't called."
"She won't," Nathaniel said quietly. "She's living in her limestone mausoleum on the Upper East Side, surrounded by silence and servants. She chose the empire. We chose each other."

From the living room, Miles’s voice rang out, high and authoritative. "Dad! The castle roof is falling down! We need structural reinforcement immediately!"
Nathaniel pressed a long, tender kiss to Elena’s lips before turning back toward the chaos. "Duty calls, darling. Apparently, my engineering skills are required on the front lines."
