Chapter 22 - The Frostline DefenseBy evening, the legal shockwaves hit the cottage. Max, the private investigator turned loyal operative, called through an encrypted line at 9:00 PM.

"Boss, Lockwood isn't playing Westport games," Max warned, his voice crackling over the speaker. "He's managed to corrupt a magistrate in the state appellate division. They’ve slapped a temporary restraining order on the Westport trust deed. Technically, the cottage is still tied up in the Cross Holdings asset freeze."
Nathaniel sat at the kitchen table, the glow of a single brass lamp illuminating the sharp angles of his face. Elena was standing beside him, pouring hot tea into a ceramic mug.
"They're trying to starve us out legally," Elena said calmly, setting the mug down. "They think if they make life here unstable enough, you'll walk back to Manhattan to negotiate a settlement."
"They don't understand," Nathaniel said, looking up at her. "I don't have anything left in Manhattan to bargain with."
"Except me and the children," she whispered.
Nathaniel reached out, pulling her down onto his lap, burying his face in the crook of her neck. "Never. I'd burn Cross Holdings to the ground before I let them touch this house."
From the hallway, a small voice broke the quiet.
"Dad?"
Miles stood rubbing his eyes, clutching a worn stuffed rabbit under his arm. "Is the man in the big coat going to take our toys away again?"
Nathaniel stood up, carrying Miles into his arms, holding him tight against his chest. "No, buddy. No one is taking anything. Your dad is just... doing some very complicated math."
May you like
"My teacher says math is just telling the truth with numbers," Miles mumbled sleepily, resting his head on Nathaniel's shoulder. "Are you telling the truth, Dad?"
"Always," Nathaniel murmured, his grey eyes burning with a quiet, terrifying resolution. "Always."
