Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW IN THE MIRROR

An hour later, Emily found herself standing inside the master suite of Victor’s yacht. The room was larger than her entire apartment, decorated in dark mahogany, leather, and gold trim.

A team of high-end stylists and medical personal were lined up outside. Within thirty minutes, her bruised face was treated with advanced healing cream, her cheap waitress uniform was discarded, and she was dressed in a tailored crimson silk gown that matched the color of her birthmark.

When she looked in the full-length mirror, she barely recognized herself. Gone was the timid, exhausted girl who survived on instant noodles. Standing in her place was a woman with sharp eyes, high cheekbones, and an undeniable air of lethal nobility.

Knock. Knock.

Victor stepped into the room, holding a crystal glass of whiskey. He stopped, looking at her with a mix of pride and profound sadness.

"You look just like your mother, Catherine," Victor murmured softly.

"Uncle Victor..." Emily turned to face him, her heart heavy with questions. "Please, tell me the truth. What happened ten years ago? My mother told me my father died in a car crash. She said we were poor..."

Victor walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the dark sea.

"Your mother was trying to protect you," Victor explained softly. "Ten years ago, the Vance family held fifty-one percent of the Global Maritime Alliance. We controlled the trade routes between Europe and Asia. But power creates monsters."

He turned back to her, his gray eyes flashing with fury.

"Your father wasn't killed in a car crash. He was assassinated during a board meeting inside our own headquarters. Someone poisoned his wine, framed our family for illegal arms smuggling, and seized our assets overnight."

Emily felt a cold chill run through her veins. "Who did it?"

"Eleanor Whitmore was just a foot soldier," Victor revealed, his tone dropping an octave. "She was hired to manage the local real estate land grabs. The true architect of the massacre... is a man named Lord Marcus Vance."

Emily froze. "Vance? A member of our own family?"

"Your father’s half-brother," Victor confirmed with a bitter grimace. "Marcus wanted total control. When he couldn't get it legally, he slaughtered his own blood. I barely escaped with my life that night. I spent ten years in hiding, building a shadow syndicate in Europe, waiting for the moment to strike back."

He walked up to Emily and pulled the gold pocket watch from his pocket, placing it gently back into her hands.

"Your father gave you this watch because it contains the master encryption key to the Vance Vault—a hidden digital reserve holding over thirty billion dollars in untraceable assets," Victor said. "Marcus has been hunting for this watch for a decade. Today, Eleanor realized what it was, and she undoubtedly sent an emergency signal to Marcus before my men seized her."

Right on cue, a loud siren began to blare across the yacht's intercom system.

RED ALERT. UNIDENTIFIED FLEET APPROACHING.

The floor beneath them vibrated violently as the yacht’s engines roared to life.

Victor’s radio burst open with frantic static. "Boss! We’ve got three armed gunboats surrounding us! They’re flying the crest of the Alliance! It’s Marcus’s private security firm!"

Emily gripped the pocket watch tightly against her chest.

"They found us," Emily whispered.

Victor pulled a black sidearm from his shoulder holster, his lips curling into a ruthless smile. "No, my dear girl. They didn't find us. We led them here."
