Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

Twenty-four hours later.

The news shocked the entire nation. Headlines dominated every television channel, newspaper, and social media platform:

"MASSIVE FALL OF THE VANCE EMPIRE: LORD MARCUS ARRESTED FOR ASSASSINATION AND FRAUD!" "THE WAITRESS HEIRESS: MISS EMILY VANCE RECLAIMS $30 BILLION FAMILY FORTUNE!"

Inside the city’s high-security detention center, Eleanor Whitmore sat in a cold, metal interrogation room. She wore an orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her face stripped of all expensive cosmetics. Her son, Julian, sat beside her in handcuffs, sobbing uncontrollably.

The heavy iron door swung open.

Emily walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored white business suit, accompanied by two high-powered corporate lawyers.

Eleanor looked up, her eyes filled with a mixture of bitter hatred and pathetic desperation.

"Emily..." Eleanor stammered, leaning across the table. "Please! You have to help us! I didn't know Marcus was going to kill your father! I was just following orders! My son Julian had nothing to do with this!"

Emily sat down across from them, folding her hands neatly on the table. She looked at Eleanor with complete indifference.

"You slapped me across the face," Emily said softly. "You made me kneel on broken glass because I accidentally spilled a tray. You told me I was trash that deserved to be stepped on."

"I was wrong! I was arrogant!" Eleanor cried out, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. "Please, transfer the bail money! We’ll give you back every house, every piece of jewelry! Just don't let them send us to federal prison!"

Emily turned to her lawyer. "What is the status of the Whitmore assets?"

The lawyer opened a tablet. "Miss Vance, we have completely liquidated Whitmore Real Estate. Their mansion has been put up for auction, their bank accounts seized for back-taxes, and their catering company has been bought out by your estate."

"No... please..." Julian sobbed, burying his face in his hands.

Emily leaned forward, looking Eleanor directly in the eye.

"I bought your catering company, Eleanor," Emily said, her voice ice-cold. "And I’ve instructed the new management to hire a very specific crew of cleaners for the city prison facilities."

Eleanor blinked, confused. "What... what do you mean?"

"You're going to spend the next twenty years scrubbing floors," Emily whispered, a small, dark smile touching her lips. "Make sure you don't break any plates."

Emily stood up, turned her back on the screaming, pleading socialites, and walked out of the room without looking back once.
