Chapter 3 - THE GHOST OF ELENA'S PASTTwenty-four hours earlier, the atmosphere in Martín’s penthouse office had been heavy with tension.

A tall, weathered man with sharp gray temples and a scarred left eyebrow had stepped out of the private elevator, flashing a badge that made Mateo’s face drain of color when he happened to walk past. It was David Vance—former chief investigator for the federal prosecutor’s office, and the man who had investigated the suspicious circumstances surrounding Elena’s fatal car crash three years ago.
At the time, the police had ruled it a tragic accident: icy roads, a blown tire, a fatal plunge down a ravine. But David had never believed it. And neither had Elena, who, in the final months of her life, had confided in David that someone within her husband's corporate circle was systematically siphoning funds and altering real estate deeds.
"You’re walking into a slaughterhouse, Martín," David had warned him, slamming a thick manila folder onto the mahogany desk. "Valeria isn't just some social climber you met at a charity gala six months ago. She was introduced to you by Mateo. And Mateo didn't just happen to be your lawyer—he was the executor of a shadow corporation that bought up your company's distressed debt two years ago."
Martín had stared at the documents, his heart pounding against his ribs. Bank transfers, offshore shell companies, forged signatures, and a series of covert meetings between Valeria and Mateo dating back over four years—long before Martín and Valeria ever 'coincidentally' bumped into each other at a coffee shop.
"Why?" Martín had asked, his voice shaking. "What do they gain?"
"Everything," David had replied grimly. "Your grandfather left the original timberland and estate holdings under a strict family trust that can only be dissolved if the direct male heir—you—either dies, relinquishes guardianship, or is legally declared mentally unfit. Since you’re too stubborn to sell voluntarily, they engineered a hostile takeover using a Trojan horse: a fake romance, a gold-digging fiancée, and a compromised legal guardian."
"And our wedding tomorrow?" Martín had asked, a cold fury settling in his chest.
"Let it go all the way to the altar," David had whispered with a grim smile. "Let them think they’ve won. Because the moment Mateo files that final electronic signature during the ceremony to activate the trust transfer, it triggers a digital trapdoor. Every single offshore account they’ve used will be automatically flagged by federal financial crimes units for wire fraud and conspiracy."

Back in the present, inside the locked hotel suite, Martín looked down at his phone. The banking app suddenly refreshed. The frozen balance disappeared, replaced by a flashing green indicator light: TRAPDOOR ARMED. UPLOADING SECURE PAYLOAD TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES.
A slow, chilling smile spread across Martín’s face. Mateo thought he had checkmated the king. But he had just walked straight into a minefield.
