Chapter 7 - THE STORM AT THE LIGHTHOUSEThe wind whipped off the churning black ocean, howling like a wounded beast against the weather-beaten stone walls of the abandoned Blackwood Lighthouse. Salt spray and heavy rain lashed across the jagged cliffs, soaking Martín to the bone within seconds of stepping out of his car.

He parked his sedan right at the edge of the cliff, leaving the headlights blazing against the heavy wooden door of the lighthouse tower.

Martín stepped out, pulling his wool coat tight against the freezing gale. His shoes crunched on the gravel as he climbed the moss-covered stone steps toward the heavy iron-banded door. It stood slightly ajar, a dim, sickly yellow glow spilling out from the stairwell inside.

He pushed the door open with a loud, metallic screech.

"I'm here!" Martín called out, his voice echoing up the spiraling stone stairs. "Show yourself, Victoria!"

"Up here, Mr. Vance," a voice drifted down from the top of the tower, smooth and calm, cutting cleanly through the howling wind.

Martín gripped the iron handrail and began climbing the endless spiraling steps. His legs burned, his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, but he didn't stop. Every step brought him closer to the truth about his wife, his fortune, and the child he loved more than life itself.

When he reached the top landing, he stepped into the cavernous lantern room.

The glass windows on all sides looked out over the black, violent sea, rattling violently in their iron frames. In the center of the room, standing beside the massive, unlit Fresnel lens, was Victoria Sterling. She was holding a red leather ledger book, flipping slowly through its yellowed, handwritten pages.

"You came," Victoria said without turning around. "I must admit, Martín, I misjudged you. I thought you were just another pampered corporate heir living off the scraps of your grandfather's empire. But you actually have a spine."

"Cut the games, Victoria," Martín snapped, stepping forward, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. "You mentioned Elena. You mentioned Lucía's birth certificate. Explain yourself right now, or I swear to God I'll throw you off this cliff."

Victoria finally turned around. The dim emergency light overhead cast deep, dramatic shadows across her sharp cheekbones. Instead of looking frightened, a tragic, almost nostalgic smile touched her lips.

"You still think Elena was the victim of a tragic accident, don't you?" Victoria asked softly, stepping closer and extending the red ledger toward him. "Look at the date on this entry. Exactly thirty years ago. The day your grandfather and my father signed a partnership to build the empire you now call your own."

Martín hesitated, then snatched the ledger from her hands. He flipped it open.

The handwriting was immaculate, written in fountain pen ink. But as his eyes scanned the names listed under the primary shareholders, his breath caught in his throat.

There was his grandfather’s signature. Beside it was the signature of Victoria’s father. And beneath them, written in a cramped, frantic hand, was a third name Martín never expected to see: Dr. Elena Vance—Senior Genetics Researcher, Project Genesis.

"Elena wasn't just your wife, Martín," Victoria whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling, confidential tone. "She was the lead scientist who engineered the surrogate genetics program for the elite families of this city thirty years ago. And do you know whose DNA was used as the master template for the primary lineage?"

Martín stared at the page, the world spinning violently around him. "Whose?"

"Yours, Martín," Victoria said quietly. "And mine. We aren't business rivals. We’re brother and sister. And little Lucía? She isn't your daughter... she’s your clone."
