Chapter 5 - THE UNEXPECTED VISITORThe rain hammered against the glass canopy of the hotel entrance, creating a steady, hypnotic roar. The remaining guests had long since fled, leaving behind scattered champagne flutes, discarded corsages, and the lingering scent of expensive perfume mixed with absolute disaster.

Martín sat on a velvet armchair in the deserted lobby, rubbing his temples to stave off a splitting migraine. Lucía had finally fallen asleep curled up on the sofa next to him, her breathing soft and even, completely exhausted by the emotional roller coaster of the day.
David Vance walked out of the elevators, holding a steaming paper cup of black coffee and a heavy, encrypted tablet.
"We got the servers," David said, handing the coffee to Martín. "The financial crimes unit mirrored every single hard drive in Mateo’s downtown office. We have the paper trail for the shell companies, the illicit wire transfers, and—interestingly enough—the medical records."
Martín paused, the rim of the cup halfway to his lips. "Medical records? Whose?"
"Valeria’s mother," David replied grimly, pulling up a digital file on the tablet. "Or rather, the woman playing her mother. According to our database check, her real name isn't Martha Gomez. She’s a professional actress with a long history of participating in fraudulent high-society scams across three different states."
Martín stared at the screen, feeling a cold weight settle in his stomach. Everything—every single detail of his romance with Valeria, every coincidence, every shared laugh at the coffee shop, every tear shed over her supposed family struggles—had been a meticulously scripted theatrical production designed from the ground up to trap him.
"And the car crash?" Martín asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "Elena’s accident three years ago... was that Mateo too?"
David looked away for a split second, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. "We don't have definitive physical proof for the brakes yet, Martín. But we found an email thread from three years ago between Mateo and an unknown third party discussing a 'pending structural vacancy in the primary ownership line.' The timing lines up to the exact week of Elena's accident."
Before Martín could process the horrific implications of that revelation, a sharp chime echoed from the elevator bank.
The private VIP elevator doors slid open with a soft ping.
A tall, elegant woman in a severe black trench coat stepped out into the lobby. Her hair was pulled back into a tight, flawless chignon, and she wore dark designer sunglasses despite the indoor lighting. She wasn't carrying luggage, nor did she look like a panicked wedding guest. She looked like an apex predator stepping into a feeding ground.
She walked with a slow, deliberate click of her heels straight toward Martín and David.
"Mr. Martín Vance," she said, her voice rich, velvety, and dripping with an unsettling confidence. "I must say, you certainly know how to ruin a perfectly good wedding."
Martín stood up instantly, placing himself defensively between the stranger and the sleeping child on the sofa. "Who are you? Security cleared the lobby ten minutes ago. How did you get up here?"
The woman slowly removed her sunglasses, revealing piercing, ice-blue eyes that seemed to strip Martín down to his soul. A small, enigmatic smile played at the corner of her lips.
"My name is Victoria Sterling," she said smoothly, extending a gloved hand that no one took. "And unlike Valeria, I don't need to steal your estate to own it. I already hold the master mortgage on this entire hotel, your corporate headquarters, and eighty percent of your grandfather's original timberland."
Martín felt the floor drop out from under him. "That's impossible. The family trust holds those deeds."
"Not anymore," Victoria replied softly, stepping closer until the scent of expensive sandalwood filled the air. "Mateo was a very ambitious man, Mr. Vance. But he was just an employee. Do you really think a mid-level corporate lawyer had the capital to finance a multi-million-dollar hostile takeover all on his own?"

She reached into her designer handbag, pulled out a pristine, cream-colored envelope bearing a heavy wax seal, and laid it gently on the coffee table right beside Lucía’s sleeping head.
"Welcome to the real game, Martín," Victoria whispered, turning on her heel and walking back toward the elevator before he could utter a single word. "And trust me... you're already three moves behind."
