Chapter 10 - THE FINAL WHISPERThe sun dipped below the ocean line, casting long, peaceful shadows across our new front porch. The windchimes hanging from the eaves sang a soft, melodic tune in the evening breeze—completely different from the cold, metallic clicks of doorknobs and smoke detectors I used to fear.

My phone sat on the small wooden side table next to my iced tea. It hadn't buzzed once all day. No threatening texts. No fake alibis. No corporate lies. Just silence. The sweet, beautiful silence of a life reclaimed.
I opened the blue folder resting on my lap—the new one I had made yesterday at the county clerk’s office. Inside was my new driver's license, my new bank statements, and Lily’s school enrollment forms for the upcoming semester. All bearing my maiden name: Elena Vance.
It felt strange at first, like wearing a coat that didn't quite fit yet. But with every passing day, the fabric felt a little softer, a little lighter, a little more like my own skin.
Lily leaned her head against my shoulder, her eyelids growing heavy as the evening stars began to blink into existence across the twilight sky.
"Mommy?" she murmured sleepily.
"I'm right here, sweetie."
