Chapter 4 - THE AWAKENING IN THE DARKWhen consciousness dragged me back to reality, the world was spinning violently on a tilted axis.

My wrists burned, chafed raw against rough hemp rope. My ankles were bound tightly to the heavy wooden legs of the dining room chair. My head throbbed with a relentless, jackhammer pulse, and the metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.

"Elena? Mommy?"

Lily’s voice cut through the fog in my brain. I forced my eyelids open, the morning light slicing through the sheer curtains like daggers.

We weren't in the kitchen anymore. We were tied up in the master bedroom.

Marcus and Julian stood by the window, speaking in hushed, urgent tones while looking out at the street. On the king-sized bed behind them, my emergency blue folder lay wide open, its contents scattered across the duvet—birth certificates, bank statements, marriage licenses, all glowing under the amber light of the bedside lamp.

"She kept copies of the offshore routing numbers," Julian hissed, shaking a piece of paper in Marcus’s face. "If the cops find this in the investigation, the whole 'botched robbery' narrative falls apart in five minutes!"

"Calm down, old man," Marcus snapped back, adjusting the collar of his expensive jacket. "Derek is twenty miles past the county line, establishing his alibi at a diner with three witnesses. Once we finish the job here, we stage the break-in, plant the stolen jewelry in the alley, and call 911 ourselves as the 'concerned neighbors' who saw suspicious activity."

My heart hammered against my ribs. They were going to kill us both. Make it look like a violent home invasion gone wrong. A tragedy that would break Derek’s heart on national television.

I scanned the room desperately, ignoring the searing pain in my shoulder where the stun gun had made contact. Lily was tied to a smaller chair a few feet away, her mouth taped shut with silver duct tape, her wide, terrified eyes locked on mine.

Think, Elena. Think! Fear is fast, but survival requires cold calculation.

My hands were bound behind the chair, but as I shifted my weight, I felt something sharp pressing against my lower back. The edge of the brass radiator cover. If I could lean back and rub the hemp rope against the jagged, rusted corner of the metal vent, I might be able to fray the fibers enough to snap them.

"Hey!" Julian shouted, turning around suddenly and catching me moving. "Look who decided to join the land of the living."

Julian strode across the room, his heavy boots thudding against the floorboards. He crouched down in front of me, grabbing me roughly by the jaw and forcing me to look at him.

"You always were a stubborn one, Elena," Julian sneered, his breath reeking of stale coffee and mints. "Derek told you time and time again to stay out of his business files. If you had just played the quiet, clueless housewife, you and the kid could have lived out your days in luxury. But you just had to dig, didn't you?"

I spat a mouthful of blood straight into his face.

Julian’s smile vanished. With a savage backhand, he struck my cheek, sending a blinding flash of white light across my vision.

"Bitch," he snarled, wiping my blood off his cheek with the back of his sleeve. "Let’s see how tough you are when we turn the gas on."
