Six months later, the federal indictment against the syndicate was finalized, sealing Derek, his financial backers, and the remaining conspirators behind bars for the rest of their natural lives with no possibility of parole. The multi-million-dollar asset forfeiture was partially awarded to victims of their corporate fraud, securing a permanent, untouchable trust fund for Lily’s education and our new beginning. We didn't stay by the ocean; we moved to a quiet, sunlit mountain town in Colorado where the air was crisp, the neighbors baked apple pies on Sunday afternoons, and every door had a sturdy, reliable deadbolt that I installed with my own hands. Sitting on our new wooden porch on a bright, cloudless morning, watching Lily chase a golden retriever across the green grass, I took a long sip of my coffee.
