Chapter 2 - THE DEVIL'S PARTNERSHIPThe television speakers hissed with a burst of static before Marcus’s voice boomed through the house, crystal clear and chillingly casual.

"Nice try with the kitchen window, Elena. But the perimeter is locked. You’re only embarrassing yourself."

Lily screamed and leaped into my arms, wrapping her legs around my waist so tightly I could barely breathe. I backed away from the window, my eyes locked on the glowing screen. Marcus raised the sledgehammer, resting it against his shoulder like a golfer holding a nine-iron.

My blood ran ice cold. This wasn't just a random home invasion or a jealous husband snapping in secret. This was a calculated execution, planned down to the minute, executed by men who believed they held all the cards.

"Derek!" I screamed at the camera, my voice cracking with pure, unadulterated rage. "Derek, you coward! If you can hear me, you listen to me! Whatever money you think you're getting from this insurance payout, whatever debt you're trying to bury, you won't survive it! I left copies! I left files!"

The television speakers let out a low, mocking chuckle. It wasn’t Marcus laughing. It was Derek.

"You didn't leave anything, Elena," Derek’s voice filtered through the audio system, smooth and devoid of any human warmth. "You’ve spent the last six years organizing Tupperware and folding baby clothes while I built an empire. You don't know the first thing about corporate liabilities, offshore accounts, or policy clauses. Marcus is just there to help expedite the transition. Open the door, honey. Let's make this clean."

The transition.

In that single, sickening heartbeat, the puzzle pieces snapped together. The missing hours, the late-night phone calls, the sudden spike in life insurance policies, the fake business trips—it wasn't an affair. It was liquidation. Derek was drowning in corporate debt, embezzlement charges were closing in on him, and the only way out was a tragic domestic tragedy that left his wife and child dead in a "botched break-in," leaving him the sole beneficiary of a multi-million-dollar payout.

We weren't his family anymore. We were his retirement plan.

"Mommy, look!" Lily pointed a trembling finger toward the basement door in the hallway.

The heavy wooden door—the one with the industrial deadbolt that only opened from the outside—was slowly beginning to turn.

Someone was already inside the basement.
