Chapter 18 - The Final Sweep

Before Elena could speak, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom shattered inward as a dozen federal marshals, led by Marcus and armed tactical units, swarmed into the room.

“Elena Vance, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, conspiracy, and racketeering,” the lead federal agent announced, slamming steel cuffs around her wrists before she could even reach for her briefcase.

The Vanguard directors didn't even try to run. They sat frozen in their seats as federal agents methodically cataloged their laptops, phones, and private encryption keys, hauling them out of the skyscraper in a televised perp walk that played live across every major news network in the country.

I stood by the window, watching the police cruisers load them up into transport vans down on the street below. The skyline looked brighter today—cleaner, sharper, cleared of the parasites that had tried to leech off the foundation I built from the red clay of Atlanta.

My phone buzzed. It was a video message from St. Catherine’s Medical Center.

I tapped the screen.

Claire was sitting up in her hospital bed, looking radiant, holding two of our newborn triplets in her arms while a nurse cradled the third. She looked up at the camera, her fierce, beautiful eyes crinkling at the corners with a warm, knowing smile.

“Are you coming home yet, Mr. Billionaire?” she asked softly through the screen. “Or are you too busy buying and selling the city?”

“I’m done buying the city, Claire,” I whispered back into the phone, a broad, genuine smile breaking across my face for the first time in days. “I’m coming home.”
