Chapter 6 - The Race Against the Clock

Down in the ICU, the monitors were flashing a harsh, blinking amber. Claire’s blood pressure was dropping past safe margins, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps that tore at my soul.
Dr. Bennett stood over her, his hands moving with desperate precision. “Mr. Sloane, her organs are beginning to show signs of systemic shutdown. If that courier helicopter doesn't land on the roof within ten minutes, we’re going to lose her.”
I stood beside the bed, my hand clenched around Claire’s cold, lifeless fingers. Her skin felt fragile, like winter ice. I pressed her knuckles against my lips, whispering the words I hadn't said often enough through the endless blur of boardrooms, skyscraper openings, and multi-million-dollar deals.
“Don't you dare leave me, Claire,” I muttered, my voice cracking for the first time in twenty years. “You built this life with me. You sat on the sidewalk with my ruined blueprints. You don't get to miss the rest of the story.”
Outside the reinforced double doors of the ICU, a heavy, rhythmic thrum vibrated through the ceiling tiles.
The roof access light flickered green.
Marcus slammed through the corridor doors holding a heavy silver lockbox stamped with biohazard seals. “The helicopter touched down two minutes early! The medical team has the neutralizing agent!”
Two emergency physicians rushed forward, tearing open the silver container to reveal a sealed glass vial filled with a glowing amber liquid. Without wasting a second, they swapped out the primary IV bag, connecting the new serum directly into Claire’s central line.
We watched the monitors in agonizing silence. Ten seconds. Twenty seconds. A minute.

Then, the frantic amber flashing on the heart monitor smoothed out into a steady, rhythmic green pulse.
Claire’s chest rose, taking a deep, shuddering breath that filled the silent room like a miracle.
