Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Web

By sunrise, St. Catherine’s Medical Center was surrounded by federal agents and local authorities. Julian Vance was sitting in an interrogation room downstairs, singing like a canary in exchange for a federal plea deal, dropping names that sent shockwaves through the corporate elite of Atlanta.
It wasn't just Julian.
Vanessa Vale’s name was at the top of the financial distribution list.
I sat in the private family lounge, staring out the reinforced glass at the morning sun breaking over the city skyline. The skyscrapers I had built looked different in the daylight—tall, imposing, but ultimately hollow without the woman who gave them meaning.
Marcus stepped into the lounge, holding a manila folder and a secondary tablet.
“We raided Vanessa’s downtown penthouse an hour ago,” Marcus said quietly, laying the folder on the glass table. “We found offshore transfer receipts, communication logs with Julian, and a detailed schedule of Claire’s hospital visits for the past three months. She didn't just know about the plot—she helped coordinate the timing of the delivery to coincide with the birth.”
I opened the folder. Inside was a printed email chain between Vanessa and a corporate rival who had tried to execute a hostile takeover of Sloane Infrastructure Group six months ago—a rival I had crushed into bankruptcy.
They hadn't just wanted to destroy my business. They wanted to destroy my bloodline.
“Where is Vanessa now?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

“She tried to board a private charter flight at Peachtree-DeKalb Airport ten minutes before federal marshals locked down the tarmac,” Marcus replied. “She’s in custody. She’s demanding a lawyer and refusing to speak.”
“Tell her she doesn't need to speak,” I stood up, buttoning the jacket of my charcoal suit. “Tell her I’m coming down to talk to her myself.”
