Chapter 9 - The Final Mastermind

I stood up, leaving Vanessa staring in terror at the federal agent as the marshals stepped forward to secure her wrists with steel binders. I walked out into the corridor, where Marcus handed me the tablet.
“It’s not just a corporate rivalry, Boss,” Marcus said grimly. “Look at the financial routing on the last transaction before the hospital break-in.”
I scrolled through the digital ledgers. The money didn't trace back to a rival real estate firm. It traced back to my own board of directors—specifically, to Jonathan Sterling, the elderly, patriarchal chairman of Sterling Capital, the investment firm that backed my very first commercial development a decade ago.
Sterling had mentored me when I was nobody. He had welcomed me into high society when the old-money elites of Atlanta slammed doors in my face.
And all along, he had been waiting for the right moment to absorb Sloane Infrastructure Group entirely—by eliminating the family that anchored me.
“Where is Sterling right now?” I asked, my voice dropping into a chilling register.
“Emergency board meeting at the downtown tower,” Marcus replied. “They’re voting on an emergency executive succession clause due to your ‘unavailability’ following your wife’s medical emergency.”

I looked down at the tablet, then back toward the elevators leading up to the street.
“Cancel the car,” I told Marcus, a grim, dangerous smile touching the corner of my mouth. “We’re taking the helicopter. It’s time to close the blueprint.”
