Chapter 2 - Waking in the StormThe sterile smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic beep of a heart monitor were the first things Clara registered when she opened her eyes. The glaring white lights of the hospital room felt like needles behind her eyelids.

"She’s waking up. Get Dr. Harrison immediately," a nurse’s voice called out urgently from the side of the bed.

Panic surged through Clara’s veins like ice water. She threw her hands down to her stomach, her fingers frantic. My baby. Where is my baby?

"Clara, look at me. Breathe," Dr. Harrison stepped into her line of sight, his face a mask of professional calm mixed with profound relief. He gently placed a hand over hers. "You’re safe. You’re at Mercy General."

"The baby..." Clara gasped, tears spilling hot and fast down her cheeks. "Did she... did he...?"

"She is alive, Clara," Dr. Harrison said, a warm smile breaking through his serious expression. "Born via emergency C-section just minutes after the fire department brought you in. You suffered a severe placental abruption. If those paramedics had arrived even five minutes later... well, we wouldn't be having this conversation."

A sob tore from Clara's throat, a mix of pure terror and overwhelming gratitude. "Is she okay? Can I see her?"

"She’s in the NICU under close observation because she was premature, but she’s stable and fighting hard. Just like her mother," Dr. Harrison assured her, before his expression hardened slightly. "Clara, the police officers who responded to the 911 call took your statement while you were under anesthesia. They also filed a mandatory report with the district attorney's office. Given the circumstances of you being deliberately locked inside during a medical emergency... an investigation has already begun."

Clara stared at the sterile white ceiling, the fog of pain and fear slowly clearing to reveal a cold, unyielding resolve. Julian had left her to die over a birthday party. He had locked her in like an animal.

The woman who loved him died in that kitchen. In her place, someone entirely new was born.
