Chapter 5 - The Walls Closing InWhile Julian sat in a holding cell contemplating his ruined future, Clara sat in a quiet recovery room at Mercy General, watching the steady rise and fall of her baby's chest through the clear walls of the portable incubator beside her bed.

The hospital room door opened softly, and Eleanor stepped inside, carrying a large leather briefcase.
"Clara? How are you holding up?" Eleanor asked gently, her professional armor replaced by genuine empathy.
"I'm tired," Clara whispered, her eyes never leaving her daughter. "And I'm angry. But mostly... I'm just so glad she’s here."
"She’s a fighter, just like her mom," Eleanor smiled, pulling a chair up to the bedside and opening her briefcase. She laid out a neat stack of documents. "I have some updates regarding Julian’s arraignment. The judge denied bail entirely. Given the digital logs, the 911 audio recording where you can clearly be heard stating he locked you in, and the medical testimony regarding the life-threatening nature of your abruption, the district attorney is pushing for the maximum sentence."
Clara nodded slowly, feeling a profound weight lift from her shoulders. "What about our assets? The house? His accounts?"
"That brings us to part two," Eleanor said, her eyes gleaming with tactical brilliance. "Before Julian even realized what hit him, your legal team filed an emergency asset freeze. Because Julian’s name was on the mortgage, but the primary funding for the down payment and house remodel came from your pre-marital inheritance trust account, we’ve filed an immediate injunction to secure sole ownership of the property."
Eleanor slid a financial summary across the blanket. "Furthermore, Julian’s employer—Vance & Sterling Architectural Firm—was notified of his felony arrest this morning. By noon, the board of directors suspended him indefinitely pending termination hearings. His corporate credit cards have been frozen, and his personal accounts are currently tied up in court-ordered restitution reserves for your medical expenses."
Clara looked at the papers, tracing the signature line where her maiden name—Clara Miller—was already printed.

"He thought he had total control," Clara said softly, a ghost of a smile touching her lips. "He thought locking the door meant locking me out of reality."
"Instead," Eleanor replied, closing the folder with a crisp snap, "he locked himself inside a cage of his own making. And the key is at the bottom of the ocean."
