Chapter 9 - The Final EchoThe prison visiting room was cold, smelling of stale bleach, cheap coffee, and institutional despair.

Julian sat at the stainless-steel table, his hands cuffed to a metal loop in the center. The orange jumpsuit hung loosely from his frame; the arrogant posture that had once defined him was completely broken. He looked older, gaunt, his eyes hollowed out by sleepless nights and the brutal reality of concrete walls.

The heavy door at the end of the room clicked open.

Julian looked up, his breath catching in his throat. For a second, he thought—he hoped—it might be Clara. Maybe she had come to forgive him. Maybe she realized they were still family.

Instead, a tall, sharp-eyed woman in a tailored charcoal suit walked in. Eleanor Vance.

She didn't sit down. She simply stood on the other side of the glass partition, looking down at him with a cool, professional detachment.

"What do you want?" Julian croaked, his voice cracking. "Where is she? Is Clara here?"

"Clara is at home, Mr. Vance," Eleanor said calmly, pulling a single folded document from her briefcase and sliding it across the counter toward the slot beneath the glass. "She didn't come today. And she will never, ever come to visit you. This is the final decree of absolute divorce, signed, sealed, and executed."

Julian stared at the paper through the smudged plastic partition. His name—his solitary, disgraced name—was the only one on the signature line. Below it, a formal notification of permanent name change for his daughter, stripping her of the Vance surname entirely so she would never carry the shadow of his cowardice.

"She can't do that... she's my daughter..." Julian whispered, tears finally spilling hot and fast down his cheeks, wetting the front of his orange jumpsuit. "I made a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes..."

"A mistake is forgetting your keys, Julian," Eleanor said, turning toward the exit without a trace of pity in her eyes. "Locking your high-risk, bleeding wife inside a house while she goes into labor so you can eat birthday cake isn't a mistake. It’s who you are."

She paused at the door, glancing back one last time.

"Enjoy your cake, Julian."
