Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of an EmpireTwo weeks later, the preliminary hearing began in the County Courthouse. The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious onlookers drawn by the sensational headlines plastered across every local news outlet: “The Smart-Lock Trap: High-Risk Wife Locked in Labor While Husband Celebrates Birthday.”

Julian Vance sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, looking hollowed out, exhausted, and bewildered. The expensive watch was gone, replaced by a plastic intake band. His slicked-back hair was messy, and the arrogance that once defined him had evaporated into a desperate, hollow stare.
His high-priced defense attorney, a silver-haired shark named Henderson, leaned over. "Mr. Vance, the prosecution has submitted the smart-lock digital telemetry data, the 911 call audio, and the medical expert testimony. We don't have a winning jury defense here. Your best hope is a plea bargain for reckless endangerment with a reduced sentence of three years."
"Three years?!" Julian hissed, his eyes widening in horror. "I have an architectural firm! I have projects starting in Dubai! I can't go to prison!"
"You locked your wife inside a house while she was hemorrhaging and in active labor, Julian," Henderson said bluntly, snapping his briefcase shut. "You’re lucky they aren't charging you with attempted manslaughter."
Across the aisle, Clara sat at the plaintiff table alongside Eleanor Vance. Clara wore a sharp, tailored black blazer, her posture upright and unyielding. She didn't look like a victim anymore; she looked like a conqueror.
When the judge entered the courtroom, everyone rose.
"Calling case number CR-2026-4891, The State versus Julian Vance," the judge announced, adjusting his glasses. "The court has reviewed the preliminary evidence, including the motion for asset forfeiture and sole custody filed by the plaintiff."
The judge looked directly down at Julian, his expression grim. "Mr. Vance, the actions documented in this case display an extreme depravity of indifference toward human life—specifically, the lives of your wife and newborn child. Before we proceed to trial, the court is inclined to accept the state's recommendation regarding civil penalties while criminal proceedings move forward."
Julian stood up shakily, his voice trembling. "Your Honor... it was a mistake. I didn't mean for her to get hurt. I just wanted... I just wanted some peace and quiet for my mother's birthday..."
A collective murmur of disgust rippled through the courtroom gallery.
The judge banged his gavel once, cutting off the excuse instantly. "Mr. Vance, a birthday party is an event on a calendar. Labor and childbirth are matters of life and death. You chose cake over human survival. You chose control over compassion."

The judge picked up his fountain pen, signing two separate documents with sharp, definitive strokes.
"Effective immediately, the court grants full, sole physical and legal custody of the minor child to Clara Miller. Furthermore, all marital assets, real estate holdings, and corporate shares held by the defendant are hereby transferred to the plaintiff as restitution and compensatory damages. Court is adjourned."
