Chapter 3 - THE LION’S WRATH

Ethan didn't turn around immediately. He slowly pulled his finger out of his son’s tiny hand, closed the incubator portal, and smoothed down the front of his blood-crusted scrubs.

When he finally turned to face his mother, the shift in the room was palpable.

The nurses nearby froze. The air grew frigid.

Ethan didn't look like the dutiful, brilliant doctor Victoria had spent thirty years controlling. He looked like an apex predator that had just been dragged out of hell.

"What did you just call them?" Ethan asked. His voice was dangerously quiet, a low, rumbling growl that sent an instinctual chill down the spines of the two security guards behind Victoria.

Victoria sneered, tossing her perfectly styled silver hair. "Don't take that tone with me, Ethan. You were always so soft-hearted. That girl tricked you five years ago, and now she’s back to leech off the family estate using these bastards as leverage. I’ve already spoken to the hospital board. She has no insurance. She is being discharged to County line—"

BANG!

Ethan moved so fast the security guards didn't even have time to react.

He closed the distance between them, his hand slamming into the heavy concrete wall right beside Victoria’s head with a sound like a gunshot. Victoria gasped, jumping back, her pearls clattering against her chest as she stared in absolute horror at her son.

Ethan leaned down, his dark eyes ablaze with an unholy, terrifying fury. His blood-stained face was inches from hers.

"If you ever speak about my wife and my children like that again," Ethan hissed, his voice trembling with a violence that made the guards reach for their holsters, "I will burn everything you love to the ground."

"W-wife?" Victoria stammered, her regal composure cracking for the first time in her life. "She is not your wife! She’s a dirty, low-class—"

"She is the mother of my children!" Ethan roared, the force of his voice reverberating off the glass windows of the NICU. "And five years ago, you forged bank records. You threatened her brother. You drove her into poverty while she carried my blood! Did you think I wouldn't find out? Did you think I was stupid, Mother?!"

Victoria’s face paled. She tried to step back, but Ethan’s hulking six-foot-three frame boxed her in against the wall.

"I read her journal," Ethan said, his voice dropping back into a horrifying, icy whisper. "I saw what you did. Every hour she spent suffering in that warehouse, every drop of blood she lost on that floor tonight—that is on your hands. And by God, Victoria, you will pay for every single drop."

"Ethan, be reasonable!" Victoria panicked, her voice high and shrill. "I did it for you! To protect the family legacy! To protect Caldwell Biotech! A girl like that would have ruined your social standing! She’s nothing!"

"She is everything," Ethan snarled.

He turned his head toward the two guards, who were sweating profusely, unsure of whether to draw their weapons on the heir to a multibillion-dollar empire.

"If either of you touches this room, this door, or anyone inside it," Ethan warned them softly, "I will have you stripped of your licenses, bankrupt your families, and throw you in a federal prison before sunset. Step outside."

The two guards looked at each other, paled, nodded hastily, and backed out of the NICU, leaving Victoria completely defenseless.

"Ethan, you can't treat me like this!" Victoria cried, her authority crumbling. "I am your mother!"

"As of this second, you are nothing to me," Ethan said coldly. He pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, pressed a speed-dial button, and brought it to his ear.

"Marcus," Ethan said into the phone.

On the other end, Marcus Vance, the head of Ethan’s personal legal empire and private intelligence firm, answered instantly. "Yes, Dr. Caldwell?"

"Freeze all family trust transfers to Victoria Caldwell," Ethan ordered coldly. "Revoke her security clearance to the Caldwell Biotech headquarters. Fire her personal board appointees. And draft a legal injunction blocking her from coming within five hundred yards of St. Catherine’s Hospital, Hannah Brooks, or my children."

"Consider it done, sir. Anything else?"

"Call the district attorney," Ethan added, staring deeply into his mother’s terrified eyes. "Tell him I want a full criminal investigation opened into Victoria Caldwell for blackmail, extortion, and corporate fraud. Give him everything in the vault."

"Ethan! No! You wouldn't!" Victoria shrieked, clutching her chest as if she had been stabbed. "That will destroy the family name! It will tank the stock!"

"I don't give a damn about the stock," Ethan said softly. "I have five billion dollars in my personal venture funds. I don't need your legacy, Mother. I am the legacy."

He leaned in one last time, his voice a lethal whisper. "Get out of my hospital. Before I have security drag you out in handcuffs."

Victoria swallowed hard, her eyes wide with terror and disbelief. Realizing she had lost completely, she turned on her heels and rushed out of the NICU, her heels clicking in a panicked, erratic beat down the corridor.

Ethan took a deep breath, running a hand through his messy hair. The anger washed away, leaving behind a cold, absolute determination.

He turned back to the incubators, looking at the two fragile lives fighting to survive inside.

He pulled out his phone again.

"Marcus," Ethan commanded. "I want the entire top floor of St. Catherine’s cleared out. Convert it into a private, high-security medical suite. Hire the top three neonatal specialists in North America and put them on a private jet to Chicago within two hours. Money is no object."

"Understood, sir. And what about Miss Brooks?"

Ethan looked toward the glass window connecting to the ICU, where Hannah lay still and pale under the fluorescent lights.

"Transfer her to the private suite immediately," Ethan murmured softly, his tone softening with endless tenderness. "And bring me a ring."
