Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW OF THE CONTRACT

Eleanor Vance—the sole heiress to Vance Global Logistics and the woman Ethan’s mother had tried to force him to marry for the past three years—smirked coldly. She adjusted her designer sunglasses, resting them on top of her slick blonde hair, and tossed a heavy leather folder onto the glass coffee table in the center of the suite.

"I’m here to collect what’s mine, Ethan," Eleanor said smoothly, her eyes darting toward the hospital bed with absolute disgust. "Or should I say, what your family signed over to mine two years ago."

Ethan didn't move an inch from Hannah’s side. "Speak quickly, Eleanor, before I have security throw you out of the window."

Eleanor chuckled, a dry, melodic sound. "Always so dramatic. Open the folder, Ethan."

Marcus, Ethan’s lawyer who had just walked in behind Eleanor’s guards with a worried expression, slowly walked over to the table and opened the file. His eyes scanned the document rapidly, and his face turned dead pale.

"Ethan..." Marcus whispered, looking up with cold terror. "This is a binding corporate debt pledge and forced merger contract."

"What are you talking about?" Ethan barked.

"Three years ago, when you refused to join Caldwell Biotech’s board, your mother took out a $1.2 billion private liquidity loan from Vance Global to finance the expansion of the new research labs," Marcus explained, his voice shaking. "She put up 45% of Caldwell Biotech shares as collateral. But there was a clause."

"Clause 14-B," Eleanor chimed in, her red lips curving into a predatory smile. "If Caldwell Biotech defaults on the loan payments—which they did yesterday, thanks to your little financial freeze on your mother's accounts—the Vance family has the legal right to seize all collateral, including all patent rights to the maternal-fetal medical tech you personally developed."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits. "My patents belong to my private foundation, not Caldwell Biotech."

"They did," Eleanor corrected, taking a slow step forward. "Until your mother forged your signature on the intellectual property transfer papers two months ago to secure the second tranche of the loan. You see, Ethan, your mother was desperate. She was hemorrhaging money trying to keep you under her thumb."

Hannah, lying in the bed, felt a cold knot of terror tighten in her gut. She reached out, her pale hand clutching the edge of Ethan’s jacket.

"Ethan..." she whispered softly.

Ethan reached back, squeezing her hand reassuringly without breaking eye contact with Eleanor. "The contract is invalid if the signature was forged. I’ll contest it in court."

"You can try," Eleanor laughed maliciously. "But trial proceedings take years. In the meantime, Vance Global has already filed an emergency injunction. As of one hour ago, a judge signed an order freezing all operations under your name—including the funding for this hospital's private neonatal research wing."

Eleanor pointed a long, manicured finger at the two incubators housing the tiny, helpless babies.

"Those incubators, those experimental breathing ventilators keeping your little bastards alive? They run on technology patented under Caldwell Biotech," Eleanor spat, her eyes twinkling with cruel triumph. "By noon today, my technicians will enter this facility and repossess all equipment tied to Vance Global assets. Unless..."

"Unless what?" Ethan’s voice was so low it sounded like grinding stones.

"Unless you fulfill the secondary clause of the merger agreement," Eleanor said, stepping closer until she was just three feet from Ethan. "You leave this white-trash warehouse whore, you marry me, and you merge your personal medical empire with Vance Global. Do that, and the equipment stays. Your babies live."

Silence descended upon the penthouse suite, so thick and suffocating it felt like a physical weight.

Hannah’s heart stopped. She looked at the two tiny, fragile babies in the incubators, then looked at Ethan’s stiff, tense back.

They want to turn off the machines.

"Ethan..." Hannah sobbed quietly, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. She pulled his jacket, her voice breaking into agonizing shards. "Ethan, don't let them take the machines. I'll leave! I'll take the blame! Just save our babies!"

"Shut up, Hannah," Ethan said gently over his shoulder, his voice remarkably calm, though his dark eyes burned with an unholy inferno.

He turned back to Eleanor.

"You came into my hospital," Ethan said, taking a single, heavy step toward Eleanor. "You threatened my wife. And you threatened the lives of my newborn children."

Eleanor held her chin high, trying to maintain her arrogant posture, but the sheer aura of lethal menace radiating from Ethan made her heart skip a beat.

"It's business, Ethan," Eleanor sneered, hiding her sudden nervousness. "You have four hours to decide. Marry me, or watch your preemies choke when we pull the plug."

Ethan didn't flinch. Instead, a terrifying, dark smile slowly spread across his handsome face.

"Four hours?" Ethan said softly. "Eleanor, you made a fatal mistake."

"What mistake?" Eleanor frowned.

"You thought my mother was the smartest person in the Caldwell family," Ethan whispered.

He pulled his encrypted phone from his pocket, tapped the screen once, and turned it toward Eleanor.

On the screen was a live financial ticker showing the stock market indices of the London and New York exchanges.

"Ten minutes ago, while you were walking up here to play villain," Ethan said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice, "my private capital firm, Phoenix Apex, executed a short-sell attack on Vance Global Logistics."

Eleanor’s face froze. "What... what did you say?"

"Your father’s company relies on offshore shipping lanes in South America, correct?" Ethan continued, taking another step forward, looming over her like a shadow of doom. "Five minutes ago, I purchased 51% of the debt notes of your primary shipping fleet from the Bank of Geneva. I just declared Vance Global in technical default."

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Eleanor’s phone inside her designer handbag suddenly burst into a violent, frantic vibration.

She fumbled, snatching her phone out with shaking hands. The screen displayed her father’s name—CEO VANCE.

She answered, her voice trembling. "Father...?"

A scream of pure, panicked rage erupted from the phone speaker so loud that everyone in the room heard it:

"ELEANOR, WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?! PHOENIX APEX IS LIQUIDATING OUR ASSETS! OUR STOCK IS DOWN 60% IN PRE-MARKET TRADING! BANKS ARE FREEZING OUR ACCOUNTS! WHO DID YOU OFFEND?!"

Eleanor’s hand went limp. The phone slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the floor.

She stared at Ethan in absolute, horror-stricken shock.

"You..." Eleanor stammered, her high-and-mighty posture completely collapsing. "You... you owned Phoenix Apex? That's a twenty-billion-dollar sovereign hedge fund!"

"I built it quietly over twelve years so I would never have to bow to my family," Ethan said coldly, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "You wanted a war, Eleanor? You got one. In three hours, Vance Global will be bankrupt. Your father will be ruined. And you will be begging on the streets."

"No... please!" Eleanor gasped, tears of panic spilling from her eyes, her arrogance entirely shattered. "Ethan, please! We can talk about this! Don't do this to my family!"

"Marcus," Ethan commanded without turning around.

"Yes, Dr. Caldwell?"

"Call security. Throw this garbage out of my sight. And notify the police that Eleanor Vance is being charged with extortion and attempted murder of two infants."

Four heavy-set hospital security guards burst through the doors, grabbing Eleanor by her arms and dragging her out kicking and screaming into the hallway.

"Ethan! No! Forgive me! ETHAN!" Her desperate shrieks faded down the corridor until the heavy doors clicked shut.

Silence returned.

Ethan took a deep breath, adjusted his cuffs, and walked back to the bed. The terrifying monster that had just destroyed an international corporation vanished instantly, replaced by a tender, loving man.

He sat on the edge of the bed and gathered Hannah into his strong arms, pulling her pale, trembling body against his broad chest.

"It's over," Ethan whispered into her hair, kissing her forehead over and over again. "Nobody is touching our babies. Nobody is touching you."

Hannah buried her face in his neck, sobbing uncontrollably, her hands clutching his back as if anchoring herself to the only real thing in a terrifying world.

"Ethan..." she sobbed. "I thought... I thought I lost you again..."

"Never," Ethan swore, holding her tighter. "Never again."

Just then, a faint, metallic beep echoed from the neonatal monitor beside them.

Ethan turned his head.

The heart rate monitor on Twin A’s incubator began to spike rapidly. Red warning lights began flashing violently.

"Nurse!" Ethan shouted, springing to his feet instantly. "Twin A is in respiratory failure!"
