Chapter 7 - THE BLOODLINE OF THE SERPENT

The gunshot shattered the silence of the underground parking garage.
A sharp, searing pain tore through Ethan’s left shoulder, knocking him back a half-step. Blood immediately bloomed through his navy suit jacket.
Jenkins gasped in horror at what she had done, her hands shaking so violently she dropped the gun onto the oil-stained concrete.
Before the metal hit the floor, Ethan closed the distance.
His right hand clamped around Jenkins’ throat like a hydraulic vise, lifting her off her feet and slamming her violently against the side of the black SUV.
"Gah!" Jenkins choked, her legs kicking air, her hands clawing futilely at Ethan’s iron grip.
Ethan didn't even look at his bleeding shoulder. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding vengeance.
"Give me the name," Ethan whispered, his grip tightening just enough to cut off her air supply. "Give me the name, or your daughter will never see you again."
"V... V..." Jenkins gasped, her eyes rolling back in her head. "Not... Eleanor..."
"Who?!" Ethan growled.
"Victoria..." Jenkins wheezed out. "Your... your mother... She... she gave the order from... from her holding cell..."
Ethan’s world went dead silent.
His own mother.
Victoria Caldwell, locked in a federal detention center awaiting trial, had used her hidden offshore accounts to hit her own newborn grandson from behind bars. Her ultimate, insane revenge to keep the "tainted blood" out of the Caldwell family line.
Ethan released his grip. Jenkins collapsed onto the concrete, clutching her throat and coughing violently, gasping for air.
Marcus and three armed private security guards suddenly burst into the parking garage, guns drawn.
"Ethan! God, you're hit!" Marcus yelled, rushing forward as he saw the blood soaking Ethan’s sleeve. "Medics, get down here!"
"I'm fine," Ethan spat, pressing his gloved hand over the shoulder wound, refusing to bow to the pain. "It’s a grazing wound. Secure her. Hand her over to the FBI immediately."
"Ethan, you need surgery—"
"I said I’m fine!" Ethan bellowed, turning his terrifying gaze back to Marcus. "Get my jet ready."
Marcus blinked, stunned. "Your jet? Where are we going?"
"To the state penitentiary," Ethan said, his voice dripping with pure ice. "It’s time to put an end to the Caldwell legacy once and for all."
An hour later. Cook County High-Security Women’s Correctional Facility.
Victoria Caldwell sat in a cold, fluorescent-lit visitation room. She was wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, but she still maintained her haughty, arrogant posture, her silver hair pulled back tightly.
The heavy steel door slid open.
Ethan walked in, flanked by two armed federal marshals. His left arm was wrapped tightly in a medical sling under a fresh suit, but his presence was so overpowering that the air in the room seemed to drop below freezing.
Victoria sneered, leaning back in her metal chair. "Look at you, Ethan. Coming to mock your own mother? You put me in this disgusting hole, but you can't break me. The Caldwell name—"
Ethan sat down across from her. He didn't speak. He simply placed a heavy black leather binder onto the steel table between them.
"What is this?" Victoria frowned, her arrogant eyes flashing with suspicion.
"That is the complete liquidation order of Caldwell Biotech," Ethan said calmly.
Victoria’s eyes widened. "What?!"
"As of thirty minutes ago," Ethan explained smoothly, "I acquired the remaining 55% of Caldwell Biotech shares using my sovereign capital fund. I held an emergency shareholder meeting from the back of my limousine."
Ethan leaned forward, resting his elbows on the cold steel table, staring straight into his mother’s soul.
"I liquidated the company, Mother. Every asset. Every building. Every patent. Every piece of equipment. I sold it all off to public healthcare charities for one dollar."
Victoria stood up so violently her chair screeched against the floor. "YOU DID WHAT?! THAT COMPANY TOOK THREE GENERATIONS TO BUILD! IT IS WORTH TWELVE BILLION DOLLARS! YOU GAVE IT AWAY?!"
"I burned it to the ground," Ethan replied, his voice chillingly peaceful. "Just like I promised you."
"You monster! You insane, ungrateful monster!" Victoria shrieked, slamming her manicured hands onto the table. "You destroyed our family’s life work for a penniless, low-class whore and her bastard preemies?!"
Ethan slowly pulled a second document from his jacket and slid it across the table.
"Read Clause 1," Ethan commanded softly.
Victoria, shaking with pure rage, snatched up the paper. As her eyes scanned the lines, her jaw slowly dropped, and the color drained completely from her face.
"This... this isn't a liquidation paper..." she stammered, her voice turning high and shrill. "This is... a DNA paternity test..."
"Read the names, Mother," Ethan said softly.
Victoria’s hands began to tremble uncontrollably as she read the legal document certified by the Johns Hopkins Genetic Institute:
SUBJECT A: Hannah Brooks
SUBJECT B: Victoria Caldwell
RESULT: Biological Mother and Daughter (99.99% Genetic Match)
Victoria dropped the paper as if it had turned into white-hot iron. "No... no... this is a fake! THIS IS A LIE!"
"It’s not a lie, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice filled with a tragic, dark pity. "Twenty-six years ago, before you married my father, you had an illegitimate daughter with a poor medical student in Boston. You couldn't let a scandal ruin your marriage into the wealthy Caldwell family. So you abandoned that baby girl at a county hospital orphan ward."
Victoria stumbled back, clutching her head, her face contorted in absolute horror. "No... no... NO!"
"That baby girl was adopted by a poor couple in Illinois," Ethan continued, standing up slowly, his shadow covering his broken mother. "They named her Hannah."
Victoria fell to her knees on the cold concrete floor, weeping hysterically, realizing the horrifying, twisted reality of what she had done.
Hannah—the woman she had spent five years tormenting, starving, blackmailing, and trying to destroy—was her own flesh and blood.
And the two babies she had just tried to poison in the NICU... were her own grandchildren, born of her own daughter.
"I tried to kill her..." Victoria sobbed, pulling her hair, her aristocratic mind completely shattering into madness. "I tried to kill my own daughter... my own blood..."
"You spent your whole life trying to protect a fake bloodline," Ethan said, looking down at the broken woman with utter coldness. "And in the end, you destroyed yourself."
Ethan turned his back on her and walked toward the steel exit door.

"Ethan! Please! Forgive me! ETHAN!" Victoria screamed from the floor, her cries echoing off the cold concrete walls like the damned in hell. "DON'T LEAVE ME! ETHAN!"
Ethan didn't look back. The steel door slid shut, locking Victoria Caldwell inside her own personal hell forever.
