Chapter 6 - THE POISONED BLOOD

The VIP suite exploded into chaos once again.
Dr. Sarah Lin and three pediatric nurses rushed into the room, pushing crash carts and emergency equipment.
"What happened?!" Sarah shouted, pulling on gloves as she checked the infant’s vitals through the incubator portal. "His oxygen saturation dropped to 50%! He’s turning cyanotic!"
Hannah gasped, trying to sit up in bed, her face contorted in sheer horror. "My baby! What's wrong with my baby?!"
Ethan was already at the incubator, his surgeon eyes scanning the readouts with terrifying speed.
"It’s an acute allergic anaphylactic shock," Ethan barked, his nose catching a subtle, chemical odor coming from the IV line connected to the infant's arm. "His airway is swelling! Look at the IV bag!"
Sarah looked at the clear IV bag feeding saline and nutrients into Twin A’s tiny vein.
The fluid had a subtle, milky cloudiness at the bottom.
"This isn't saline!" Sarah gasped. "This bag was tampered with! Someone injected Potassium Chloride into his maintenance line!"
Hannah let out a blood-curdling scream from the bed. "NO! MY BABY! SAVE HIM!"
Potassium Chloride in a newborn’s blood was lethal within minutes—it would cause immediate cardiac arrest.
"Epinephrine! 0.01 milligrams per kilogram, NOW!" Ethan ordered, his hands moving with blind, instinctual velocity. He snapped open the incubator, yanked the poisoned IV line out of his son’s tiny arm, and inserted a fresh needle directly into his bone marrow to push the counter-medication.
"Pushing Epi!" Sarah shouted.
The tiny baby’s body spasmed. His face turned deep purple, his tiny mouth open in a soundless cry as his heart struggled against the toxic surge.
"Come on, little guy," Ethan begged, his voice cracking, his hands steady despite the sheer terror ripping his heart apart. "Breathe for Daddy! Breathe!"
Beep... Beep... BEEP.
The heart rate stabilized. The purple hue began to fade from the baby’s skin, replaced by a faint, pink flush. The ventilator caught his breath again, his tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically.
"SpO2 back up to 92%," Sarah panted, wiping cold sweat from her forehead. "He’s... he’s back. God, Ethan, that was seconds away from sudden cardiac arrest."
Ethan stood frozen over the incubator, his chest heaving, his breathing heavy and dangerous.
Someone had tried to murder his son. Right inside a locked, high-security VIP suite.
"Who prepared that IV bag?" Ethan asked. His voice was no longer human—it was a cold, demonic rumble that made every nurse in the room shudder.
"It... it came up from the central pharmacy ten minutes ago," a young nurse stuttered, shaking with fear. "A senior nurse delivered it. Nurse Jenkins."
"Nurse Jenkins has been on the floor for ten years," Sarah frowned. "She wouldn't—"
"Where is she?" Ethan demanded, turning his terrifying gaze toward the nurse.
"She... she just went down the service elevator to take her break..."
Ethan didn't wait. He sprinted out of the room like a silver bullet.
He didn't take the elevator. He shoved open the heavy metal door to the emergency stairwell and bounded down three flights of stairs, four steps at a time, his heavy footsteps echoing like thunder in the concrete shaft.
He burst through the doors of the sub-basement parking garage.
The garage was dimly lit, damp, and quiet.
A figure in blue scrubs was walking rapidly toward an unmarked black SUV parked in the dark corner. She carried a heavy duffel bag and was looking frantically over her shoulder.
"JENKINS!" Ethan’s voice echoed off the concrete pillars like a gunshot.
The woman froze, turned, and saw the towering figure of Dr. Ethan Caldwell striding toward her with terrifying speed.
She panicked, dropped her duffel bag, pulled a small silver pistol from her jacket pocket, and aimed it straight at Ethan’s chest.
"Stay back!" she screamed, her voice shrill and trembling. "Stay back, Dr. Caldwell! Don't come any closer!"
Ethan didn't slow down. He didn't even flinch at the sight of the gun. He kept walking straight toward her, his dark eyes fixed on hers like an unstoppable force of nature.
"You tried to kill my son," Ethan said, his voice flat, devoid of fear, filled only with absolute destruction.
"They paid me!" Jenkins cried, her finger trembling on the trigger. "Five million dollars! My daughter has leukemia, Ethan! I needed the money! They promised me no one would find out!"
"Who paid you?" Ethan demanded, stepping within five feet of the barrel.
"I can't say! They’ll kill my daughter!" Jenkins shrieked. "Stop moving or I swear to God I’ll shoot you!"
"Shoot me," Ethan challenged, taking another step. "Because if you don't kill me right now, I am going to break every bone in your body until you give me a name."

Panicked, Jenkins pulled the trigger.
