Chapter 19 - The Fall of the Fixer

Julian didn't hesitate. While Marcus was focused entirely on me, my twin dropped silently from the overhead catwalk directly behind Marcus, moving with the cold, silent precision of a striking predator.
Before Marcus could register the sound, Julian slammed the heavy butt of his shotgun square into the back of Marcus’s skull.
Marcus’s eyes rolled back. His grip on the pistol slackened instantly, and he crumpled to the concrete floor like a broken marionette, unconscious before he even hit the ground.
Tessa stumbled forward, gasping for air, and I caught her in my arms, pulling her and the boys into a crushing, desperate embrace.
"Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" I asked frantically, checking her face and the boys over.
"We're okay, Grant. We're okay," Tessa wept, burying her face against my shoulder while the boys wrapped their small arms tightly around my legs.
Julian stood over the unconscious form of Marcus Vance, kicking the fallen pistol away across the concrete with the toe of his boot. He let out a long, slow breath, wiping a smudge of grease and blood from his forehead.
"Well," Julian muttered, looking around the wreckage of the control room with a wry, half-smile. "Family reunions are getting a bit out of hand in this family."

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second as federal marshals and local police units—alerted by automated panic buttons wired into the facility’s secure network—converged on the municipal water plant from every direction.
Within twenty minutes, the facility was secured, Marcus Vance was loaded into the back of an armored federal transport with heavy steel cuffs around his wrists, and the nightmare that had haunted our family for six agonizing years was finally, permanently over.
